New Holland introduced the L228 in summer 2015 as the seventh wheeled model in its 200 Series. It is a vertical-lift Super Boom skid steer with a 74 hp Tier 4 Final FPT diesel and a 2,800 lb rated operating capacity, which slots it between the compact models and the 90 hp top of the line. New Holland gave it the longest wheelbase in its class with a 65/35 front-to-rear weight split for a smooth, stable ride. It also has a wide pressurized cab with a low door threshold for a clear view of the cutting edge, a see-through roof, and no rear frame towers. Common Issues & Fixes:

• Oil leaking from the engine or crankcase pressure building up: A loaded-up crankcase breather pushes oil out at the seals and gaskets on the F5H engine. Replace the crankcase breather filter 5801686484 on the service schedule.
• Engine or hydraulics running hot: Clean the radiator and oil cooler from the fan side daily in dusty or chaff-heavy work. If temps stay high with clean fins, replace the radiator 84379154 or the oil cooler. The L228 used more than one cooler, so match your part number: 47778428 or 84499497.
• Slow cranking or no start: With a good battery and clean connections, a slow crank points to the starter 2859528. An intermittent dead dash at the key points to the ignition switch 87416177.
• Engine won't hold rpm: A stretched throttle cable lets the engine drop speed under load. Replace with hand throttle cable 84258153.
• Loose bucket, worn pins or a cracked coupler: Replace worn pins with the bucket pin kit 47396814K and coupler upper pin 9614349, bent levers with new left-hand or right-hand handles, and a cracked plate with the coupler plate 47995646.
• Axle damage from hard use: A cracked housing or worn shaft can be replaced with the complete used axle and housing assembly 84596297.

• Grease the Super Boom pivots daily. The vertical-lift linkage has more pivot points than a radial arm, and dry pins wear the bores.
• Change the breather filter with the engine oil. It costs little and protects the F5H engine's seals and gaskets.
• Use the tip-off cab for big service jobs. Two bolts and about two minutes give full access to the hydrostatics and hoses.
• Have your PIN ready when you call. It is the fastest way to confirm cooler and electrical fitment.
