The New Holland L185 is a mid-size L-Series skid steer with New Holland's Super Boom vertical-lift linkage. The 2008-and-later machines covered below have an 82 hp turbocharged FPT diesel and a 2,500 lb rated operating capacity. It has a long wheelbase for stability, no rear towers to block your view, an optional dual-range drive that tops 11 mph, and a choice of mechanical or pilot controls. Check Your Build Date Before Ordering:

Our L185 filter service kit fits machines built 01/2008 and after with the FPT F5C 3.2L engine. The green-tinted cab door glass 86547915 fits North American L185 loaders built 1/2006 through 12/2007. Read the PIN and build date off your serial plate before ordering engine filters or glass.

Common Issues & Fixes:

• Wheel wobble or chaincase oil leaking at the axle: Worn axle bearings let the shaft move and wipe out the seal. Catch it early with the axle bearing kit B93911. If the damage has gone further, replace the axle shaft 86546632, the axle housing 86594881, or the complete axle corner assembly 87440218.
• Weak travel or no drive on one side: Check chaincase oil level and drive chain condition first. If the chains are good, the drive unit may be worn out. See the final drive 87035340.
• Loader arms or bucket drifting down: Worn cylinder piston seals. Rebuild with the lift cylinder seal kit 86570933, lift cylinder seal kit 87644128 or bucket cylinder seal kit 86570931. If the rod is scored or bent, replace the complete lift cylinder 87038980 or bucket tilt cylinder 87038982.
• Engine or hydraulics running hot: The radiator and hydraulic oil cooler pack up with chaff and dust. Clean them from the fan side, and replace the radiator foam seal kit 87648128 if hot air is recirculating around the cores. If temps stay high with clean fins, replace the radiator or cooler. The L185 used more than one, so match the part number on yours.
• Hard starting or engine dying under load: Check the fuel filters and fuel/water separator first, then the fuel lift pump 2830122. A slow-cranking engine with a good battery points to the starter 2859528.
• Attachments loose on the plate: Worn coupler pins or a weak latch. Rebuild with the coupler pin and bolt kit 87597878K or the complete quick coupler kit 86601599.

Pro Tips:

• Grease the Super Boom pivots daily. The vertical-lift linkage has more pivot points than a radial arm, and dry pins wear the bores.
• Check chaincase oil and wheel play regularly. Catching worn axle bearings early saves the shaft, housing and drive.
• Let the turbo cool before shutdown. Idle for a minute or two after hard work to protect the turbocharger bearings.
• Know your build date. Engine filters and cab glass changed between the 2006–2007 and 2008-and-later L185s.
