When New Holland introduced the L221, it was the largest and most powerful of the three radial-lift skid steers in the 200 Series. It runs a 74 hp turbocharged FPT 3.4L diesel and has a 2,100 lb rated operating capacity. The radial arm gives strong breakout force for digging, grading and pushing, and the long wheelbase and low center of gravity keep it stable when carrying loads. Common Issues & Fixes:

• Oil leaking from the engine or crankcase pressure building up: A loaded-up crankcase breather pushes oil out at the seals and gaskets on the F5H engine. Replace the crankcase breather filter 5801686484 on the service schedule.
• Hard starting or loss of power: Water or debris in the fuel is the usual cause on a common-rail engine. Replace the fuel filter element 84527831 and drain the water separator regularly. A slow-cranking engine with a good battery points to the starter 2859528.
• Engine running hot: Clean the radiator from the fan side daily in dusty or chaff-heavy work, and check coolant level. If temps stay high with clean fins, replace the radiator 47946380.
• Axle damage from hard use: A radial-lift machine doing heavy pushing and grading is hard on the axles. A cracked housing or worn shaft can be replaced with the complete used axle and housing assembly 84596297.
• Loose bucket or worn loader pins: Worn pins cause slop at the bucket and coupler. Replace with the bucket pin kit 47396814K.
• Machine won't crank or electrical faults at the key: A worn ignition switch causes intermittent no-start and dead-dash problems. Replace with ignition switch A134737.

• Change the breather filter with the engine oil. It costs little and protects the F5H engine's seals and gaskets.
• Drain the fuel water separator often. Common-rail injectors are expensive and don't tolerate water.
• Use the flip-top cab for big service jobs. Tilting the cab forward gives full access to the hydrostatics and hoses.
