John Deere 410K Backhoe Loader: Tier 4 Interim Heavy-Class
Built from 2012 through 2017, the 410K is the heavy-class JD backhoe loader designed for serious lift-and-dig work. The K refresh brought EPA Tier 4 Interim emissions compliance with a refined PowerTech diesel, DPF aftertreatment, AutoShift transmission, and electrohydraulic joystick controls. It hit the heavy-class JD backhoe benchmark of the mid-2010s.
Where the 410K fits in the JD backhoe line
The 410K succeeded the 410J as the heavy-class industrial backhoe loader in JD’s lineup. Production ran from 2012 through 2017. The K refresh brought EPA Tier 4 Interim emissions compliance - the first 410 with diesel particulate filter (DPF) aftertreatment - and continued the AutoShift transmission and electrohydraulic joystick options carried forward from the 410J.
Tier 4 Interim is a transitional emissions tier between Tier 3 (cooled EGR only) and Tier 4 Final (DPF + SCR + DEF). The 410K runs cooled EGR and a DPF but does not require SCR or DEF dosing. Service includes periodic DPF cleaning but skips DEF complexity entirely.

What changed from the 410J to the 410K
- Engine. EPA Tier 4 Interim JD PowerTech diesel. Refined fuel system, electronic engine control, cooled EGR, and DPF aftertreatment.
- Improved fuel economy. The Tier 4 Interim PowerTech delivers measurably better fuel efficiency than the Tier 3 410J.
- Refined operator comfort. Continued cab refinement - improved climate control, updated displays, better sightlines.
- Refined controls. Smoother electrohydraulic joystick response and updated control valving.
- AutoShift refinement. Continued improvement of the AutoShift transmission for smoother automated shifts under load.
Engine, transmission, loader, and hoe
The 410K’s Tier 4 Interim PowerTech diesel drives an AutoShift transmission through wet-disc oil-cooled brakes into planetary final drives. AutoShift gives the operator automatic shifting under load - critical for productivity in heavy-class lift-and-dig work where the machine cycles between dig site and truck loading area.
Loader and backhoe hydraulics are sized for heavy-class work: loader lift cylinders, backhoe boom/stick/bucket cylinders, swing tower, and stabilizer leg cylinders all carry the heavier ratings appropriate to the 410 class. Electrohydraulic joystick controls were a common factory option; mechanical pilot-control configurations also exist and use entirely different valve and joystick parts.

- Serial number. Match parts to the machine serial.
- Engine serial. PowerTech Tier 4 Interim internal parts must match the engine serial.
- Aftertreatment configuration. DPF part numbers can vary across the production run.
- AutoShift revision. Transmission components saw mid-run revisions.
- Joystick equipment. Mechanical-linkage and electrohydraulic-joystick configurations have entirely different control components.
- Loader/backhoe configuration. Standard, quick-attach, and extended-reach configurations had different cylinder and mounting specs.
- Drivetrain configuration. 2WD and 4WD configurations have different front axle and transfer case parts.
- Cab vs. ROPS canopy. Glass, weather seals, A/C parts, and door parts differ.
Why the 410K remains a sweet-spot pick
The 410K is the heavy-class JD backhoe at the Tier 4 Interim sweet spot: DPF service requirements without DEF complexity, AutoShift productivity, electrohydraulic joystick options, and improved fuel economy over the Tier 3 410J. For contractors who want post-2012 productivity without full Tier 4 Final aftertreatment service costs, the 410K is the preferred used pick.
Maintenance priorities on a 410K: clean fuel (Tier 4 Interim common-rail injectors don’t tolerate contamination), DPF service intervals, AutoShift fluid changes on schedule, wet-disc brake fluid service, hydraulic seal replacement, and engine rebuilds when wear demands. Broken Tractor maintains parts coverage across the full 410 family.
