Where the CX140E fits in the Case excavator line

The CX140E is a 14-ton class E-Series excavator. It sits between the CX135SR short-radius machine and the CX145C SR in the Case full-size excavator lineup, occupying the production sweet spot for general site work, utility installation, and commercial earthmoving.

Locating your serial number On the Case CX140E the serial number plate is located on the right side of the upper structure, below the cab access point or near the boom pivot area. Confirm the serial before ordering - production-window-specific parts vary across the E-Series run.

Engine, hydraulics, and drivetrain

The CX140E runs a Tier 4 Final diesel through a hydrostatic dual-path drivetrain into a steel-track undercarriage. The main hydraulic pump - commonly a load-sensing piston pump - drives boom, dipper, bucket, swing, and propel through electrohydraulic control valves. Operator inputs at the joystick are translated to pilot solenoids, giving the CX140E smoother modulation and consistent multi-function performance compared with older purely hydraulic-pilot machines.

Tier 4 Final emissions compliance is achieved through a combination of cooled EGR, a diesel particulate filter (DPF), and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) dosing. Aftertreatment service is now a real part of the maintenance budget on this generation of machine.

Common service items on the CX140E

  • Engine internals: Tier 4 Final diesel pistons, rings, sleeves, head gaskets. Common-rail injection.
  • Tier 4 Final aftertreatment: DPF service intervals and regeneration behavior; DEF tank and dosing module, SCR catalyst; EGR cooler service.
  • Fuel system: Common-rail injectors, lift pump, primary and secondary filters with tight water-separator standards.
  • Cooling system: Radiator, water pump, thermostat, fan, charge-air cooler, hoses, belts.
  • Hydraulic system: Boom / dipper / bucket / swing cylinder seal kits, main pump rebuild, electrohydraulic control valves, hoses.
  • Boom and dipper: Pin and bushing service at every joint, bucket pins, thumb attachment hardware, quick coupler service.
  • Undercarriage: Steel track inspection and replacement, rollers, idlers, drive sprockets, recoil springs.
  • Swing system: Swing motor and reduction gear service, swing bearing inspection, swing brake.
  • Electrical / ECU: Engine ECU, instrument cluster, sensors, harness, telematics module on equipped units.
  • Cab glass and wiper: KHN16820 24-inch wiper blade, KHN3046 front lower glass, and KHN2632 front upper glass cross-fit across Case and Link-Belt excavators.
  • Operator station: Seat, joystick controls, pedal linkage, instrument panel, cab HVAC.
Tier 4 Final aftertreatment - service implications The CX140E’s DPF and SCR systems are reliable when fed clean fuel and quality DEF, but they require attention. DEF tank must stay topped up. The DPF will request periodic high-temperature regenerations. NOx sensors fail occasionally and can trigger derate conditions if not replaced. Factor aftertreatment service into the maintenance budget for any CX140E in production.

What to verify before ordering

  • Serial number. Confirm the serial on the CX140E before ordering year-specific parts.
  • Engine serial. Engine internal parts must match the engine serial number.
  • Hydraulic cylinder bore. Cylinder seal kit fit depends on bore dimension - measure before ordering.
  • Tier 4 emissions revision. DPF and DEF/SCR components saw revisions during production - confirm by serial.
  • Engine ECU calibration. Common-rail injectors and ECU sensors are calibrated to specific build years.
  • Bucket and quick coupler. Quick-coupler interface varies - confirm before ordering attachment-side hardware.

Why the CX140E still earns a paycheck

The Case CX140E is a 14-ton class production excavator for general site work, utility installation, residential and commercial earthmoving, and mining or quarry work depending on configuration. It is the current-production option in this class from Case and benefits from the strongest parts and dealer support of any CX-series machine in the field today.

Maintenance priorities on a CX140E: clean fuel and tight water separation for common-rail injection, DPF regen behavior tracking, hydraulic oil condition, swing-bearing lubrication, steel-track tension and undercarriage wear monitoring, and pin and bushing service.
