John Deere 850K Crawler Dozer: Tier 4 Heavy-Class Hydrostatic 850

Produced from the early 2010s through 2019, the 850K brought JD's heavy-class crawler dozer to EPA Tier 4 emissions with a refined PowerTech 6090 6-cylinder diesel, DPF and SCR aftertreatment, modernized sealed cab, and SmartGrade-ready electronics. The K-gen platform set the stage for the JD 850L that followed.

Where the 850K fits in the JD crawler family

The 850K succeeded the 850J as JD's EPA Tier 4 heavy-class hydrostatic crawler dozer. The K-gen platform took the 850 line into the modern emissions era with a Tier 4 PowerTech 6090 6-cylinder engine paired with diesel particulate filter (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) aftertreatment.

The K-gen 850 ran the heavy-class hydrostatic dual-path drive - refined but unchanged in concept from earlier 850 generations. The cab was modernized with a larger sealed-and-pressurized operator station, refined joystick controls, full-color monitor display, and integrated grade-control compatibility. What changed from the 850J to the 850K

  • Engine. EPA Tier 4 JD PowerTech 6090. Step up in displacement from the 6068 used in the 850J - sized for the heavy-class chassis with additional headroom for production work. Cooled EGR, DPF, and SCR aftertreatment.
  • Aftertreatment. DPF and SCR add service requirements not present on the Tier 3 850J - periodic DPF cleaning, DEF tank refills, NOx sensor service, DPF differential pressure sensor monitoring.
  • Operator station. Larger sealed pressurized cab with improved climate control, refined joystick controls, full-color monitor display, integrated grade-control compatibility.
  • Hydrostatic drive. Refined pump and motor controls with smoother modulation and improved low-speed response on the heavy-class chassis.
  • Lighting. Standard LED lighting on most configurations.
Tier 4 aftertreatment - service implications The 850K’s DPF and SCR systems are reliable when fed clean fuel and quality DEF, but they require attention - especially in heavy-class production duty cycles. DEF tank must stay topped up. DPF will request periodic high-temperature regenerations. NOx sensors fail occasionally and trigger derate conditions. Factor aftertreatment service into the maintenance budget on heavy-class K-gen machines.

Engine, hydraulics, and undercarriage

The 850K’s Tier 4 PowerTech 6090 engine powers the hydrostatic dual-path drive system, the implement hydraulic circuit, and steering hydraulics. The 6090 is JD’s heavy-class 6-cylinder diesel - used across the 850 dozer line, large wheel loaders, and forestry machines. Broad dealer support and well-supported aftermarket parts.
