Case 420CT Compact Track Loader: 2006–2012 400-Series CTL

The Case 420CT is part of Case’s 400-series skid steer / compact track loader family — Tier 3 compact diesel, hydrostatic dual-path drive, and the operator interface that bridged the XT-series and the modern alpha (SR/SV/TR/TV) lineup. Produced from 2006 through 2012, the 420CT is the rubber-track sibling to the 420 wheeled skid steer.

Where the 420CT fits in the Case skid steer / CTL line

The 420CT sits in the Case 400-series skid steer / CTL range alongside the wheeled 420 and the larger 430. Tier 3 compact diesel architecture, electronic engine controls, and the cab and instrumentation that defined Case’s mid-2000s skid steer / CTL line before the alpha rename to SR/SV/TR/TV.

The 420CT is the rubber-track CTL variant of the 420 platform — same engine, same loader hydraulics, but with a dedicated CTL undercarriage carrying track chains, sprockets, idlers, and rollers in place of wheels and axles. That undercarriage swap unlocks ground pressure and traction the wheeled skid can’t match, at the cost of higher recurring wear.

Locating your serial number On the Case 420CT the serial number plate is located on the kick plate behind the operator’s right leg inside the cab. Confirm the serial before ordering — the 400-series saw multiple revisions across its production run, and engine and hydraulic configuration can change by build year.

Engine, hydraulics, and drivetrain

The 420CT runs a Tier 3 compact diesel through a hydrostatic dual-path drivetrain. Loader hydraulics use a piston pump feeding electrohydraulic control valves for the lift and tilt circuits. The CTL undercarriage adds track chains, sprockets, idlers, and rollers — and track wear is the largest single recurring cost on any 400-series CTL.

The wet-disc park brake is integrated with the hydrostatic deceleration logic, so park-brake faults and hydrostatic charge-pressure faults often present together. Common-rail high-pressure injection is standard on the Tier 3 engine, and clean fuel with tight water separation is non-negotiable for injector life.

Common service items on the 420CT

  • Engine internals: Tier 3 compact diesel pistons, rings, sleeves, bearings, gaskets. Common-rail injection components.
  • Fuel system: Common-rail injectors, lift pump, and very tight water-separator filtration — contamination kills injectors fast on this platform.
  • Cooling system: Radiator, water pump, thermostat, fan, charge-air cooler, hoses, belts.
  • Hydraulics: Loader lift and bucket tilt cylinder seal kits (86570919 / 86570931 / 86570922 cross-fit on NH/Case alpha-series), piston-pump rebuilds, electrohydraulic control valves.
  • Drivetrain: Hydrostatic dual-path pumps and drive motors, charge pump, hydraulic filters.
  • Undercarriage: Rubber tracks, sprockets, idlers, rollers — the largest single recurring cost on a CTL.
  • Hardware: 191048A2 axle stud & nut cross-fits broadly across the Case skid steer line.
  • Brakes / control: Park brake, control linkage, 48139268 control shock absorber on Case/NH alpha-series control valves.
  • Electrical / ECU: Engine ECU, machine controller, instrument cluster, sensors, wiring harness.
  • Cab / operator station: Cab HVAC, seat, gauges, joystick controls, cab glass, 47405956 windshield wiper blade on cab-equipped units.

What to verify before ordering

  • Serial number. Confirm the serial on the Case 420CT before ordering year-specific parts — the 400-series saw multiple running changes.
  • Engine serial. Internal engine parts must match the engine serial number, not just the machine serial.
  • Hydraulic cylinder bore. Cylinder seal kit fit depends on bore dimension — measure before ordering.
  • Cab vs. ROPS canopy. Operator station equipment varies between cab-equipped and open-canopy configurations.
  • Undercarriage configuration. Confirm track width and roller/idler pattern against your machine before ordering undercarriage components.
  • Control pattern. H-pattern vs. ISO joystick configuration affects control valve and linkage parts.

Why the 420CT still earns a paycheck

The Case 420CT is the mid-2000s Case compact track loader that bridged the XT-series and the current alpha lineup. Tier 3 emissions, modern electronics, and cab ergonomics that put the operator in a better seat than the XT predecessor. The 420CT class size still hits a sweet spot for landscape, site prep, and ag-utility work where a wheeled skid would tear up turf or sink in soft ground.

Maintenance priorities on a 420CT: clean fuel and tight water separation for common-rail injection, hydrostatic charge pressure, and track tension and undercarriage wear monitoring. Get the undercarriage right and the rest of the machine will run for years. Broken Tractor maintains parts coverage across the 400-series and the broader Case skid steer / CTL family.
