Cat D9 Series Dozer Hydraulic Cylinders

This category covers blade tilt cylinder groups, ripper tip cylinder groups, and hydraulic cylinder tubes for Caterpillar D9 series crawler dozers — the D9N, D9R, and D9T. The D9 is a 50-ton-class production machine that pushes 9SU and 9U blades and rips overburden all day, so its blade and ripper cylinders take punishing loads. Broken Tractor stocks complete tilt cylinder groups, ripper cylinders, and replacement tubes ready to ship, plus rebuild options for the ones that can be resealed.

Fits Models At A Glance

D9N, D9R, D9T — with shared cylinder groups and tubes fitting D8L dozers and 844, 844H, 844K wheel dozers

Fitment note: Verify your serial number and blade configuration (SU, U, or S) and ripper type (single-shank vs multi-shank) before ordering. The D9N uses different cylinders than the D9R and D9T, and the same blade function can take a different group depending on the machine.

What's In This Category

Tilt Cylinder Groups

Tilt cylinder group for the D9R and D9T (1096778), the group covering 844, 844H, 844K, D9R, D9T, and DV232 (1098833), and the tilt cylinder group for the D8L and D9N (3G5707). These control blade pitch for cutting and carrying on the D9's big semi-universal and universal blades.

Ripper Cylinder Groups

Ripper tip cylinder group for the D9R and D9T (1325149). This pitches the ripper shank tip for penetrating and fracturing hardpan, rock, and compacted material behind the machine.

Hydraulic Cylinder Tubes

Cylinder tube for the D9R and D9T (1096783) and the tube shared across the D8L, D9N, D9R, and D9T (1661855). Replace the tube when the bore is scored but the rod, gland, and piston are still serviceable — a major cost saver on cylinders this size.

Fitment Tip

The D9 splits into two cylinder eras. The D9N (an elevated-sprocket machine that followed the D9L) shares the 3G5707 tilt cylinder group with the D8L and uses the 1661855 tube. The D9R and D9T use the newer 1096778 tilt cylinder group and 1096783 tube, with the 1098833 group crossing over to the 844-series wheel dozers. On the ripper end, the 1325149 tip cylinder group fits both the D9R and D9T. Because the D9R and D9T cover single-shank and multi-shank ripper configurations, confirm your ripper setup before ordering. The D9 serial number is on the rear of the machine, left side, high on the frame rail, and is often hidden by the ripper. Pre-2001 machines use an 8-digit serial; 2001 and newer use a 17-digit VIN. Call us with your serial and blade/ripper configuration and we'll confirm the right group before you buy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which tilt cylinder group fits my Cat D9R or D9T dozer?

The D9R and D9T use tilt cylinder group 1096778. There's also the 1098833 tilt cylinder group, which covers the D9R and D9T along with the 844, 844H, and 844K wheel dozers and the DV232. If you have a D9N instead, it uses the 3G5707 group shared with the D8L. Confirm your serial number and blade configuration before ordering, since the D9 tilt cylinder changed between the N and R/T generations.

Does the D9N use the same cylinders as the D9R and D9T?

No. The D9N uses the 3G5707 tilt cylinder group (shared with the D8L) and the 1661855 cylinder tube. The D9R and D9T use the newer 1096778 tilt cylinder group and 1096783 tube. They are not interchangeable, so always verify which D9 generation you have before ordering a tilt cylinder or tube.

Can I replace just the cylinder tube on my Cat D9 instead of the whole cylinder group?

Yes. Broken Tractor stocks D9 cylinder tubes separately — 1096783 for the D9R/D9T and 1661855 for the D8L/D9N/D9R/D9T. If the cylinder bore is scored but the rod, gland, and piston are still good, replacing just the tube saves thousands over a complete cylinder group. Inspect the rod and gland first to confirm they're reusable, since these are expensive cylinders to rebuild twice.

What ripper cylinder fits the Cat D9R and D9T?

The ripper tip cylinder group 1325149 fits both the D9R and D9T. It pitches the ripper shank tip for penetration and fracturing. The D9 runs both single-shank and multi-shank ripper configurations, so confirm your ripper setup and serial number before ordering to make sure you get the correct cylinder for your machine.

Why is my Cat D9 blade or ripper drifting or slow?

On a D9, drift or slow movement almost always traces to worn internal cylinder seals or a leaking control valve. These are very large high-pressure cylinders, so even minor internal bypass shows up as visible drift under load. Pressure-test the cylinders individually — if they hold when plugged but drift when reconnected, the control valve is the problem. If a cylinder bypasses internally and the bore is scored, replace the tube or complete group rather than reselling a worn bore.

Where is the serial number on a Cat D9 dozer?

On the D9 and other large Cat dozers, the serial number is on the rear of the machine, left side, high up on the end of the left frame rail — it's frequently hidden by the ripper attachment. Pre-2001 machines use an 8-digit serial; 2001 and newer machines use a 17-digit VIN. You need this number, plus your blade and ripper configuration, to order the correct cylinder group or tube.
