Fitment Tip

Because Caterpillar built lighter and heavier D5s at the same time, the cylinder that fits depends entirely on your exact model and serial number. The D5C shares parts with the D3 and D4 C-series (136-3156, 143-7219). The D5G splits its angle cylinder by serial prefix (216-7388 early vs 259-0459 late). The D5M and D5N have their own lift and angle cylinders (167-7551, 152-6482) with dedicated seal kits (393-3606, 185-7020). The D5H XL uses the heavy 124-5741/3G8932 pin set and 111-3302 seal kit. The D5K and D5K2 use the newest cylinder set (364-9326, 364-9335, 364-9346). The serial number on D5K models is under the cab above the rear of the left track; on earlier machines it's near the cab on the left side of the engine compartment. Frequently Asked Questions

Which blade lift cylinder fits my Cat D5M or D5N dozer?

The blade lift cylinder for the D5M and D5N is part number 167-7551 — it's the same cylinder for both models. If you're rebuilding rather than replacing, the D5M/D5N blade lift cylinder seal kit is 393-3606. Confirm your blade configuration before ordering the angle cylinder components, since those differ between standard, XL, and LGP setups.

What's the difference between the 216-7388 and 259-0459 angle cylinders for the D5G?

Both are blade angle cylinders for the D5G, but they cover different serial ranges. The 216-7388 fits early D5G machines (before WGB2700 and RKG2121, plus the FDH1141-up and FDW1-up builds). The 259-0459 fits later D5G machines from WGB2701 and RKG2122 up. Check your serial prefix before ordering — mixing these up is a common wrong-part return on the D5G.

Can I rebuild my Cat D5C blade cylinders instead of replacing them?

Yes. For the D5C, the tilt cylinder seal kit is 132-7058, the Series III angle cylinder seal kit is 7X2752, and the combined lift and tilt kit is 246-5917 (1-1/2" rod, 3-1/2" bore). As long as the cylinder rod and bore aren't scored or pitted, a seal kit rebuild is far cheaper than a complete cylinder. Replace the tilt cylinder pins (8J0928, 6Y1421) and bushings (4D0298) if there's slop at the mounts.

Do the D5K and D5K2 use the same hydraulic cylinders?

Yes. The D5K and D5K2 share the same blade lift cylinder (364-9326 or 476-2812 depending on serial), angle cylinder (364-9335), and tilt cylinder (364-9346). These also fit the D3K, D3K2, D4K, and D4K2. Confirm your serial prefix (JLF, YYY, WWW, TRF, or KWW) since the lift cylinder has a serial split.

What seal kit fits the D5M XL angle cylinder?

The angle cylinder seal kit 185-7020 fits the D5M, D5M XL, and D5M LGP, along with the D4H XL and D4H LGP. For the D5H XL angle cylinder, use the 111-3302 seal kit instead, and order the swivel bushings (4D4431) and snap rings (2H5549) if those are worn. Rebuilding is much cheaper than a complete cylinder when the rod and bore are still good.

Where is the serial number on a Cat D5 dozer?

On D5K models, the serial number is under the cab above the rear of the left track. On earlier D5 machines it's on the left side of the engine compartment near the cab.
