Why is my Cat 966 bucket or lift arms drifting down?

Drift usually comes from worn cylinder seals or a leaking control valve, and on these loaders it often starts with contamination. Small imperfections on the rod let contaminants past the seals, damaging the bore. Hydraulic efficiency can drop as much as 20% before an operator notices. Pressure-test the cylinders — if they hold when plugged but drift when reconnected, the control valve is the issue. If a cylinder bypasses internally, reseal or replace before the contamination spreads.

Where is the serial number on a Cat 966 or 972 wheel loader?

On the 966 and 972, the serial number is on the left (highway) side of the machine behind the front tire. Pre-2001 machines use an 8-digit serial; 2001-and-newer machines use a 17-digit VIN. You need this number, plus the cylinder casting number, to order the correct cylinder or tube.
