Case 590 Super N Backhoe Loader: Specs, Parts & Common Issues

The current-production, largest-frame Case Construction King backhoe. In service since 2008 with a Tier 3 launch engine and updated through Tier 4 Interim and Tier 4 Final with SCR + DEF. Extendahoe standard, Carraro Powershift, wet-disc brakes, ProControl pilot joystick - the most refined 590-line machine Case has built.

Case 590 Super N current-production larger-frame N-generation backhoe loader

The 590 Super N is the current-production larger-frame Case backhoe loader. It launched in 2008 as the N-generation replacement for the 590 Super M, and it continues in production today with running updates through three emissions tiers: Tier 3, Tier 4 Interim (with DPF), and Tier 4 Final (with SCR + DEF). The 590 Super N occupies the same position in Case's lineup the 590 Super L and 590 Super M did before it - the larger-frame sibling of the 580 Super N, with longer backhoe reach and larger loader capacity, sharing most service parts with the smaller 580 line.

If you're maintaining a 590 Super N, the most important thing to know is which emissions configuration you have. Tier 3 (2008-~2011), Tier 4 Interim (~2011-2014, with DPF and EGR), and Tier 4 Final (2014 onward, with SCR and DEF) have meaningful differences in engine, after-treatment, and ECU parts - even though the backhoe iron, frame, cab, axles, and most hydraulics carry across all three.

Operating weight correction Some published specs and previous versions of our model spotlight list the 590 Super N operating weight at ~17,200 lb. That figure is wrong by roughly 3,300 lb. Per Case's published operator's manual data for a 4WD, Extendahoe-equipped 590 Super N at full fluids, the actual operating weight is approximately 20,532 lb. The lower figure occasionally appears in trade press articles but does not match Case factory documentation.

How the 590 Super N differs from the 580 Super N

The 590 Super N sits alongside the 580 Super N in the N-generation lineup. They share the cab, sheet metal, controls, electronics, and most of the powertrain. The differences are physical iron:

  • Longer backhoe boom (84538196) - 590-specific casting. The 580 Super N backhoe boom is shorter and carries a different part number.
  • Larger dipper stick - standard 302-series Super L/M dipper was replaced for the N generation with the 84246514 standard stick or 84298779 inner Extendahoe dipper.
  • Outer Extendahoe dipper (84234351) - 590 Super N specific outer telescoping section.
  • Larger loader bucket and frame - gives the 590 Super N about 4,000 lb of operating-weight premium over the 580 Super N.
  • Outrigger stabilizer leg (84308123) - heavier-duty leg for the larger backhoe.

Engine, transmission, axles, brakes, cab, glass, controls, and most hydraulic plumbing all interchange with the 580 Super N. Many parts in our catalog cross-list both models because they're literally the same casting.

Emissions tier progression

Tier 3 - FPT NEF F4HE9484 4.5L (2008 - ~2011)

The launch engine. Common-rail injection, mechanical EGR, no after-treatment beyond a passive oxidation catalyst. Same engine family that arrived in the 590 Super M Series III at the end of the M generation.

Tier 4 Interim - FPT NEF with DPF + EGR (~2011 - 2014)

EPA Tier 4 Interim required reduced PM and NOx. Case responded with cooled EGR plus a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) added to the FPT NEF engine. The DPF performs passive regeneration during normal operation and active (parked) regeneration when needed. ECU and harness changes accompanied the DPF - important for parts ordering.

Tier 4 Final - FPT F5BFL413C 3.4L with SCR + DEF (2014 - present)

Tier 4 Final brought a downsized 3.4L engine paired with Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) injection. The smaller engine maintains the same ~97 HP rating but with substantially reduced NOx output. DEF tank, dosing module, and SCR catalyst all introduced new service items. The DPF was simplified or removed in Tier 4 Final depending on configuration.

How to identify your tier without the build plate Look at the exhaust path. A short straight stack with only a muffler suggests Tier 3. A large canister behind the cab (often double-the-size of a muffler) is the Tier 4 Interim DPF. A separate DEF tank near the fuel tank, plus SCR mixing and catalyst hardware on the exhaust, confirms Tier 4 Final. The DEF tank is unmistakable - blue-labeled cap, smaller than the diesel tank.

Carraro Powershift transmission

The 590 Super N is standard with the Carraro 4-speed Powershift transmission - a meaningful upgrade from the power shuttle that was standard on the Super L and early Super M. The Powershift gives clutch-free shifting under load, electronic shift control, and an integrated torque converter. Combined with the Carraro 4WD planetary front axle, the powertrain on the 590 Super N is essentially the same as a small wheel loader.

The torque converter (87702192) is the same unit used on the 580 Super M through 590 Super N family - it crosses freely across that range, which keeps replacement cost-effective.

Bosch Rexroth load-sensing hydraulics

The N generation moved to Bosch Rexroth Series 31 load-sensing pressure-compensated hydraulics. The system delivers flow only when a function is actuated, dramatically improving fuel efficiency and reducing heat compared to open-center systems. Combined flow is approximately 42 gpm at 3,335 psi.

The variable-displacement pump senses load on each function and adjusts displacement to match - the boom, dipper, bucket, and stabilizer functions all see full pressure when called, but the pump destrokes when nothing is being asked of it. The practical result is a backhoe that's smoother under combined functions (boom-out plus dipper-curl plus bucket-curl all at once) and that holds engine speed better when working under load.

ProControl pilot joystick

ProControl is Case's pilot-hydraulic joystick system, standard on the 590 Super N. Two short-throw joysticks replace the four-lever mechanical control quadrant - the operator's left hand controls swing and boom, the right controls dipper and bucket. The pilot system uses low-pressure hydraulic signals routed through electrically modulated proportional valves to the main control valve.

ProControl is operator-pattern-switchable between Case standard and JD standard via a dash control, which is useful for fleet owners who run mixed brands.

Common issues and what to expect

DPF and SCR after-treatment

The Tier 4 Interim and Tier 4 Final emissions hardware is the most common source of dealer trips on N-generation backhoes. DPF active regeneration faults, DEF dosing module failures, and NOx sensor faults are all routine items. Most can be cleared and reset with a CNH service tool; some require replacement of the affected sensor or module.

ProControl joystick wear

The ProControl joysticks use Hall-effect position sensors that don't physically wear - but the rubber boots can tear and let moisture and grit into the joystick base, eventually corroding internal connections. Inspect boots annually and replace at the first sign of cracking.

Carraro front axle planetary wear

The Carraro 4WD front axle is durable but has a known wear point at the planetary final drives in the wheel hubs. Symptoms: clicking under steering load, oil weeps at the hub seals, or noticeable bearing rumble. The 401052A1 steering arm kit covers most of the wear items at the king pin and steering linkage.

Cab glass and weather seals

The 580M / 580N / 590 Super N cab uses a single-piece molded glass set with rubber weather seals. The 352208A1 / 352210A1 rear glass pair, the 87434783 rear center glass, and the upper door glasses are all common replacement items as the seals dry out and let moisture into the laminate.

Hydraulic pump destroking issues

The Bosch Rexroth load-sensing pump occasionally develops issues with the destroke control - the symptom is excessive hydraulic noise at idle or unexpected pressure spikes under combined functions. Usually it's the load-sense line orifice or the destroke piston seal, both of which are rebuildable.
