Case 1150C Crawler Dozer: Specs, Parts & Common Issues

Produced 1978 - 1983, the Case 1150C is the C-generation large-frame Case crawler dozer - Case A451B inline six-cylinder diesel, power shift transmission with torque converter, and refined hydraulics over the 1150B predecessor. The 1150C ran concurrently with later 1150B production and represents the bridge between the long-running 1150B and the next-generation 1150D.

Case 1150C Crawler Dozer

The Case 1150C Crawler Dozer is the C-generation large-frame Case crawler dozer, produced from 1978 through 1983. The 1150C continued the Case A451B inline six-cylinder diesel engine from the 1150B and original 1150, with refinements to the implement hydraulic system, operator station, and accessory packaging. Production overlapped with the long-running 1150B (1973-1984), and the 1150C ultimately gave way to the 1150D's longer 1983-1990 production run.

For owners and operators today, the 1150C is a refined version of the 1970s large-frame Case dozer platform: same proven A451B engine, refined power shift drivetrain, improved operator station relative to the 1150B, and broad parts cross-fit with the wider 1150 family.

The 1150C bridges the long-running B and D generations The 1150C's relatively short five-year production overlaps the late 1150B and predates the D-generation. Production-run-age 1150Cs are uncommon relative to the more widely deployed 1150B and 1150D in the used market. Parts cross-fit is strong across all three generations on most chassis, drivetrain, and undercarriage components.

How the 1150C differs from the 1150B

  • Refined hydraulic valving - improved open-center implement hydraulics with updated valve response and refined cylinder seal designs.
  • Improved operator station - refined ROPS canopy, updated control layout, refined gauge cluster, improved seat mount.
  • Updated accessory packaging - alternator, starter, and accessory belt routing updated.
  • Same Case A451B 6-cyl engine - engine architecture unchanged from the 1150B, providing parts continuity.
  • Same power shift drivetrain - power shift with torque converter unchanged from the 1150B for parts service continuity.

Case A451B inline 6-cylinder engine

The 1150C continues the Case A451B inline six-cylinder diesel engine from the 1150B and original 1150. The A451 series is the larger Case 6-cyl diesel of the 1970s and early 1980s - 451 cubic inches of displacement (approximately 7.4 liters), inline naturally aspirated configuration. Approximately 110-120 horsepower flywheel in 1150C trim.

The A451B engine ecosystem is broad - accessory parts (water pump, alternator, starter, oil pump) share with other Case industrial 6-cyl applications of the era. Injection pump and injector service is well-documented. Cylinder kits, bearings, and complete engine overhaul parts are available through both Case dealer and aftermarket diesel-engine specialists. Browse the Case Dozer Parts hub for current 1150C engine service kits.

Power shift transmission with torque converter

The 1150C uses the same power shift transmission with torque converter as the 1150B. Clutchless gear changes under load, multiple forward and reverse speeds, torque converter providing smooth power transfer. Routine service items: shift solenoids and pressure switches, clutch packs, torque converter, transmission oil cooler, transmission filter.

The torque converter is a routine rebuild item on high-hour 1150Cs and is often paired with a transmission filter change at the same service interval.

Undercarriage

The 1150C undercarriage shares broad cross-fit with the 1150B and 1150D. Sprocket bolt patterns, idler geometries, master pin dimensions, and roller designs cross-fit on multiple components - confirm by part number against your serial. Track chain, roller, idler, and sprocket are all routine wear items at production-run age.

Blade system and hydraulics

The 1150C ships with a 6-way bulldozer blade - angle and tilt control hydraulically actuated. Larger blade than the 850-class machines below. Blade cylinders, blade-carrier slider blocks, and cutting edges are routine service items. Cutting edge replacement is generally needed every few hundred to few thousand hours of dozing depending on material and operator habit.

Hydraulic implement-circuit pressure is moderate by modern standards - the 1150C introduced refined open-center hydraulic valving relative to the 1150B. Seal kit availability for the blade cylinders is generally good, with aftermarket kits supporting most 1150C-era cylinder dimensions.

Variants: Standard, LGP

The 1150C shipped in two primary track configurations:

  • Standard - standard-width track, balanced general dozing.
  • LGP (Low Ground Pressure) - wider grouser pads and extended track frame for soft-ground / wetlands / agricultural-soil work.

Track configuration affects undercarriage and frame parts. Confirm Standard vs. LGP by serial before ordering.

Common 1150C service items

Engine accessory aging

Water pump, alternator, starter, and injection pump on the A451B are routinely rebuilt or replaced over the engine's service life. Cooling system service (radiator core flush or replacement, fan belt, hose set) is a routine maintenance milestone on 40-plus-year-old machines.

Power shift / torque converter service

Shift solenoid failure, clutch pack wear, torque converter degradation, and transmission oil cooler service are routine items at production-run age. The transmission filter and fluid should be on a scheduled service interval.

Hydraulic seal failure

Blade cylinder seal failures are common at this age. Cylinder rod chrome corrosion and seal weep are typical symptoms. Seal kit rebuilds address most cases; severe rod corrosion requires rod replacement.

Undercarriage replacement cycles

Track chains, rollers, idlers, and sprockets all have measurable wear lives. Modern aftermarket undercarriage is available for the 1150 family.

Operator station and ROPS

Cab and canopy hardware, seat cushion replacement, and floorboard wear are typical aging-machine issues. ROPS structural integrity should be verified before resale.

Wiring and electrical

40-plus-year-old wiring harnesses are routinely brittle. Hard starts, intermittent gauges, and dim lights are often traced to harness corrosion or insulation failure rather than the underlying component.

Why the 1150C is still in service

The 1150C is a refined version of the 1970s/early-1980s large-frame Case dozer platform - substantial pushing power and stability for major dirt work, road maintenance, and large-acreage land-clearing. The Case A451B six-cylinder diesel is well-documented and well-supported. The power shift drivetrain with torque converter is simpler to troubleshoot in the field than the hydrostatic systems on the later 1150K / L / M generations.
