Case CX15EV Electric Mini Excavator: Battery-Electric 1.5-Ton Mini Excavator

The Case CX15EV is Case Construction Equipment’s battery-electric 1.5-ton mini excavator — lithium-ion energy storage, electric-pump hydraulics, zero tailpipe emissions, and a duty cycle aimed at indoor demolition, urban utility work, and any site where emissions, noise, or air quality matter as much as digging force.

Case CX15EV Electric Mini Excavator

Where the CX15EV fits in the Case excavator line

The CX15EV is the electric branch of Case’s 1.5-ton mini excavator class — alongside the diesel CX12D, CX17C, and CX19D compact minis. Same excavator form factor — boom, dipper, bucket, swing, propel — but the diesel engine, fuel tank, DPF, and DEF tank are replaced with a lithium-ion battery pack, an inverter, and electric drive components. Service architecture changes accordingly: no oil changes, no fuel filters, no DPF regens — but high-voltage service procedures, battery cycle tracking, and electric drive-motor inspection are now part of the maintenance plan.

Locating your serial number On the Case CX15EV the serial number plate is on the right side of the upper structure, beneath the cab door or near the boom base. Battery management system firmware and pack revisions may vary by build year — confirm the serial before ordering any battery-system service parts.

Engine, hydraulics, and drivetrain

The CX15EV replaces the diesel engine, fuel tank, and aftertreatment of a conventional CX-series mini with a lithium-ion battery pack, an inverter, and electric drive motors. The main hydraulic pump is electrically driven — boom, dipper, bucket, swing, and propel functions still run on hydraulic oil, but the pump’s prime mover is now an electric motor with a battery management system controlling output. Charging is via a portable charger on standard outlets for overnight cycles or a fast-charge interface where available. Service work on the high-voltage side requires HV-qualified technicians and appropriate PPE — this is not a wrench-and-manual job for the same reasons a hybrid car isn’t.

Common service items on the CX15EV

  • Battery system: Lithium-ion battery pack inspection, balancing, and replacement on schedule. Battery management system diagnostics and firmware updates.
  • Electric drive motors: Drive motor bearings, seals, encoders. Pump motor service for the electrically driven hydraulic pump.
  • Power electronics: Inverter, contactors, high-voltage cabling — all high-voltage service must be performed with the system de-energized and locked out, by HV-qualified technicians.
  • Hydraulic system: Boom / dipper / bucket / swing cylinder seal kits, hydraulic hoses, control valves, main pump rebuild — the hydraulic side is conventional even though the prime mover is electric.
  • Boom and dipper: Pin and bushing service at every joint, bucket attachment hardware, quick coupler service.
  • Undercarriage: Rubber-track inspection and replacement, rollers, idlers, sprockets — the CX15EV runs the same undercarriage architecture as the diesel CX-series minis in its class.
  • Brakes / propel: Hydraulic park-brake and propel-motor service, integrated with the electric drive logic.
  • Cab and climate: Electric HVAC (heat pump on most EVs draws heat from battery cooling loop), cab filtration, controls, gauges, instrument cluster.
  • Cab glass / wiper: Wiper blade and cab-glass service items — KHN16820 24-inch wiper blade cross-fits Case and Link-Belt excavator service applications.
High-voltage safety The CX15EV battery pack, inverter, and HV cabling are not serviceable by general mechanics. Any work on the high-voltage side requires HV-qualified technicians, appropriate PPE, and proper lockout / tagout. Treat it like working on a hybrid or EV automobile.

What to verify before ordering

  • Serial number. Confirm the serial on the right side of the upper structure before ordering year-specific parts.
  • Battery generation and firmware. Lithium-ion pack and BMS firmware may have revisions — confirm by serial and BMS version before ordering battery-system service parts.
  • High-voltage qualification. Any work on battery, inverter, or drive-motor circuits requires HV-qualified technicians and appropriate PPE. Lockout / tagout procedures apply.
  • Hydraulic cylinder bore. Seal kit fit depends on bore dimension — measure before ordering.
  • Charger interface. Confirm charger port spec (J1772, CCS, or proprietary) before ordering charging accessories.

Why the CX15EV still earns a paycheck

The CX15EV is Case’s answer for indoor demolition, underground / basement work, urban utility crews, and any site with emissions, noise, or air-quality constraints that make a diesel mini impractical. No diesel exhaust, no DPF regens or DEF refills to manage, no engine oil to change — the maintenance profile is fundamentally different. The trade-off is battery management, cycle tracking, and HV service procedures that require trained technicians.

Maintenance priorities on a CX15EV: battery health management and cycle counting, hydraulic seal replacement on boom / dipper / bucket cylinders as wear develops, rubber-track inspection and replacement, pin / bushing service at every working joint, and electric drive-motor inspection on schedule. Broken Tractor maintains parts coverage across the Case mini excavator family — call with your serial and BMS version and we’ll match the right component.
