Case CX145D SR Excavator: D-Series Tier 4 Final 14.5-Ton Short-Radius

The Case CX145D SR is a 14.5-ton D-Series short-radius excavator built for confined-space utility, urban, and general site work. The D generation brought Tier 4 Final emissions compliance, electrohydraulic control, and a refined cab to the platform between the smaller CX145C SR and the larger CX160.

Where the CX145D SR fits in the Case excavator line

The CX145D SR is a 14.5-ton class D-Series short-radius excavator. It slots between the CX145C SR and the CX160 in Case’s full-size excavator lineup. Short-radius (SR) geometry keeps the counterweight inside the track width, which is ideal for confined-space utility work, curbside trenching, and tight urban job sites where a conventional tail-swing excavator can’t safely rotate.

The D generation moved the platform to EPA Tier 4 Final emissions with a refined common-rail diesel, DPF and SCR aftertreatment, and electrohydraulic control of the main implement and propel circuits. The cab was modernized with improved climate control, a color monitor, and refined joystick controls.

Locating your serial number On the Case CX145D SR the serial number plate is on the frame behind the cab near the boom base, with a duplicate data plate inside the cab. Confirm the serial before ordering - production-window-specific parts (aftertreatment, ECU calibrations, hydraulic valve revisions) vary across the run.

Engine, hydraulics, and drivetrain

The CX145D SR runs a Tier 4 Final common-rail diesel through a hydrostatic dual-path drivetrain into a steel-track undercarriage. The main hydraulic pump - a load-sensing piston pump - feeds boom, dipper, bucket, swing, and propel circuits through electrohydraulic control valves. Electrohydraulic control gives the D-Series smoother modulation and better fine-feathering compared to the earlier C-Series.

Short-radius tail-swing geometry reduces the rear counterweight overhang for confined-space work, at the cost of slightly lower swing-stability at full reach. The undercarriage uses sealed-and-lubricated steel track chain with Case-pattern rollers, idlers, and drive sprockets.

Tier 4 Final aftertreatment - service implications The CX145D SR’s DPF and SCR systems are reliable when fed clean fuel and quality DEF, but they need attention. DEF tank must stay topped up, the DPF will request periodic high-temperature regenerations, and NOx sensors fail occasionally and trigger derate conditions if not replaced. Common-rail injection also demands tight water separation - water contamination kills injectors fast.

Common service items on the CX145D SR

What to verify before ordering

  • Machine serial number. Confirm the serial on the CX145D SR before ordering year-specific parts - production-window revisions affect hydraulic, electrical, and aftertreatment parts.
  • Engine serial. Engine internal parts must match the engine serial.
  • Aftertreatment configuration. DPF and DEF/SCR components saw revisions during production - confirm by serial.
  • Hydraulic cylinder bore. Cylinder seal kit fit depends on bore dimension - measure before ordering.
  • Engine ECU calibration. Common-rail injectors and ECU sensors are calibrated to specific build years.
  • Bucket and quick coupler. Quick-coupler interface varies - confirm before ordering attachment-side hardware.

Why the CX145D SR still earns a paycheck

The Case CX145D SR is a 14.5-ton class production excavator - well-suited to general site work, utility installation, residential and commercial earthmoving, and light mining or quarry work depending on configuration. The short-radius tail-swing geometry adds urban, curbside, and confined-space capability that a conventional tail-swing machine simply can’t match safely.

Maintenance priorities on a CX145D SR are: clean fuel and tight water separation for common-rail injection, DPF regen behavior tracking, DEF quality, hydraulic oil condition, swing-bearing lubrication, steel-track tension and undercarriage wear monitoring, and pin / bushing service at every boom and dipper joint. Broken Tractor maintains parts coverage across the Case CX-series excavator family.
