Case 880C Hydraulic Excavator: C-Series Legacy Heavy Excavator

The Case 880C is a heavy-class legacy hydraulic excavator from the C-Series era — the predecessor generation to the modern Case CX-series line. Built for large-scale digging, demolition, and material handling, it sits between the smaller 688 and the later 880D in the legacy Case excavator sequence.

Where the 880C fits in the Case excavator line

The 880C is part of Case’s legacy excavator lineage and a direct predecessor generation to the modern CX-series. In the legacy production sequence it sits between the smaller 688 and the later 880D, with the modern CX130 representing the eventual current-production equivalent in the same working class.

The C-series machines were built before the Tier 4 emissions era. Earliest builds ran mechanical injection; later production picked up early-generation electronic engine control. The undercarriage is steel-track, and the upper carriage runs the Case-pattern swing bearing and reduction gear arrangement that carried forward into the D-series and beyond.

Locating your serial number On the Case 880C the serial number plate is on the right side of the upper carriage near the cab, with a duplicate on the front frame near the boom pivot. Always confirm the serial before ordering — legacy excavators saw multiple revisions during their production runs, especially across the engine and main hydraulic pump.

Engine, hydraulics, and drivetrain

The 880C runs a Case- or Cummins-supplied diesel through a hydrostatic dual-path drivetrain. Pre-Tier 4 emissions throughout - mechanical injection on the earliest builds, with electronic engine control introduced on later production. The main hydraulic pump drives boom, dipper, bucket, swing, and propel functions through mechanical or electrohydraulic control valves depending on the production window.

The swing system uses a hydraulic swing motor driving through a reduction gear and turntable bearing, with a swing brake holding the upper structure when not actively rotating. The steel-track undercarriage runs Case-pattern rollers, idlers, and sprockets, with recoil springs handling track tension and shock absorption.

Common service items on the 880C

  • Engine internals: Pistons, rings, sleeves, bearings, head gaskets. Mechanical-injection or early-electronic depending on production year.
  • Fuel system: Injection pump, injectors, lift pump, primary and secondary fuel filters.
  • Cooling system: Radiator, water pump, thermostat, fan, hoses, belts.
  • Hydraulic system: Boom, dipper, bucket, and swing cylinder seal kits, main pump rebuild, control valves, hoses.
  • Boom and dipper: Pin and bushing service at every joint, bucket pins, thumb attachment hardware, quick coupler service.
  • Undercarriage: Steel track inspection and replacement, rollers, idlers, drive sprockets, recoil springs.
  • Swing system: Swing motor and reduction gear service, swing bearing inspection, swing brake.
  • Electrical: Starter, alternator, wiring harness, gauges, switches.
  • Cab glass and wiper: Cab glass and wiper service items - KHN16820 24-inch wiper blade, KHN3046 front lower glass, and KHN2632 front upper glass cross-fit across Case and Link-Belt excavators.
  • Operator station: Seat, joystick controls, pedal linkage, instrument panel, cab HVAC.

What to verify before ordering

  • Serial number. Confirm the serial on the 880C before ordering year-specific parts - revisions ran through production.
  • Engine serial. Engine internal parts must match the engine serial number, especially across the mechanical-to-electronic injection transition.
  • Hydraulic cylinder bore. Cylinder seal kit fit depends on bore dimension - measure before ordering.
  • Main pump variant. Main hydraulic pump part numbers can vary across production windows.
  • Bucket and quick coupler. Quick-coupler interface varies - confirm before ordering attachment-side hardware.
  • Undercarriage configuration. Standard vs. long-track configurations affect chain, shoe, and roller part numbers.

Why the 880C still earns a paycheck

The Case 880C is a legacy excavator from the era before the modern CX-series. Pre-Tier 4 emissions, mechanical or early-electronic injection, and a service architecture that rewards a wrench, a manual, and a parts catalog. For owners and operators running these machines, parts availability through the legacy Case service network remains broad, and many wear items cross-fit with Link-Belt and other CNH-pattern excavators of the same era.

Maintenance priorities on a 880C: clean fuel and quality filtration, hydraulic oil at temperature with clean filters, swing-bearing lubrication on schedule, steel-track tension and undercarriage wear monitoring, and pin and bushing service at every working joint. Broken Tractor maintains parts coverage across the Case legacy excavator family.
