Case 580 Series Loader Backhoe: Serial Number Guide to Year of Manufacture

If you’ve ever tried to order parts for a Case 580 and thought, “It’s a 580… that’s all I know” — you’re not alone.

Here’s the issue: “580” is the family name, not the full identity. Case changed a lot from one series to the next (and even within the same series). The fastest way to stop guessing is to use the machine serial number.

This guide helps you match your serial number to the year of manufacture, so you can confirm part compatibility before ordering.

Quick note (important)

  • Serial Numbers (S/N) refer to the tractor/machine only.

  • The loader, backhoe, engine, ROPS, and attachments often have their own serial numbers.
So if a machine has had a loader/backhoe swapped over the years, those tags won’t reliably identify the tractor itself.

Where to find your Case 580 serial number

Most commonly:

  • Left side of the dashboard, or

  • Under the left cab door / left door frame area, or

  • On/near the left frame rail on some older machines

Tip: don’t confuse this with the ROPS plate inside the cab.

Pro tips for quick series spotting (mental shortcuts)

  • Up to “E” series: serials often start with 8 or 9

  • E series to early K: serials often start with 17

  • From late-80s K-series era onward: you’ll often see JJG prefixes

  • Some mid-2000s machines: may use N5C… style numbers

Bottom line: why this matters for parts

Two machines can both be called “Case 580” and still have different:

  • transmissions and clutch setups

  • hydraulic cylinder designs

  • steering components

  • axle/driveline parts

  • pins & bushings

  • electrical variants

Your serial number is the fastest way to confirm fitment and avoid wrong parts.
