John Deere 850K LGP Crawler Dozer: The Low-Ground-Pressure Heavy-Class

The 850K LGP is the Low-Ground-Pressure variant of JD's Tier 4 heavy-class crawler dozer - same chassis, same PowerTech 6090 6-cylinder diesel, same hydrostatic dual-path drive as the standard 850K, but with a wider track footprint and longer ground contact for soft-soil work, finish grading, and slope operations.

John Deere 850K LGP Crawler Dozer

Where the 850K LGP fits in the JD crawler family

The 850K LGP is the wide-track, low-ground-pressure variant of the standard 850K. The engine, drivetrain, hydraulic system, and cab carry over directly from the standard configuration. What's different is the undercarriage: wider track shoes, longer chain length, more rollers, and a redesigned roller frame arrangement that distributes machine weight over a larger ground contact area.

LGP machines are spec'd for jobs where ground pressure matters - finish grading after fill, work in soft or saturated soil, operations on slopes where weight transfer to the downhill side could compromise traction, and any application where the standard 850K's narrower track footprint would sink or rut the working surface. Customers in forestry-floor work, wetland restoration, and large-site finish grading often spec the LGP configuration over the standard 850K for these reasons.

What makes the LGP variant different from the standard 850K

  • Wider track shoes. LGP track shoe width is materially greater than the standard 850K - more ground contact area distributes the heavy-class machine weight over a larger footprint.
  • Longer track chain. The LGP undercarriage uses a longer chain length to add ground contact in the fore-aft direction.
  • More rollers. Roller count is higher in LGP configuration to support the longer track frame.
  • Wider track frame. The track frames are spread wider apart on the LGP variant for stability with the wider track footprint.
  • Same engine, hydraulics, cab. The PowerTech 6090, hydrostatic dual-path drive, implement hydraulics, and operator station are identical to the standard 850K.
LGP-specific parts - fitment matters The LGP variant uses different track chain, track shoes, rollers, idler springs, and frame components than the standard 850K. Parts orders must specify LGP configuration. Many components in engine, hydraulics, drive system, and cab are identical between standard and LGP - but anything in the undercarriage or track frame area is configuration-specific.

Engine, hydraulics, and LGP undercarriage

The 850K LGP's Tier 4 PowerTech 6090 engine powers the hydrostatic dual-path drive system, the implement hydraulic circuit, and steering hydraulics - identical to the standard 850K. The implement hydraulic circuit drives a 6-way blade on most configurations.

The LGP undercarriage carries the JD-pattern heavy-class sealed-and-lubricated track chain in the wider, longer LGP configuration. Track shoe pattern, roller count, idler placement, and frame geometry all differ from the standard 850K.

Common service items on the 850K LGP

  • LGP-specific undercarriage: LGP track chains, wider track shoes, additional rollers, LGP idlers, LGP sprockets, idler springs.
  • Aftertreatment: DPF cleaning service, DEF dosing units, NOx sensors, DPF pressure sensors, SCR catalyst service.
  • Hydrostatic pumps and motors: Drive pump rebuilds (heavy-class displacement), drive motor rebuilds, charge pump components, filter housings, case drain hoses.
  • Hydraulic filtration: Suction strainers, return filters, charge filter, hydraulic oil.
  • Engine internals: JD PowerTech 6090 Tier 4 rebuild kits - pistons, rings, sleeves, bearings, gaskets.
  • Fuel system: Common-rail injectors, high-pressure fuel pump, lift pump, fuel filters, water separator.
  • Cooling system: Radiator, hydraulic oil cooler, EGR cooler, water pump, thermostat, hoses.
  • Implement hydraulics: Blade cylinders, seal kits, control valves, hoses.

What to verify before ordering

  • Serial number. Match parts to the machine serial.
  • Confirm LGP configuration. Standard 850K and 850K LGP share many parts - but the undercarriage, track frame, and related hardware are configuration-specific. Always confirm LGP before ordering chain, shoes, rollers, or frame parts.
  • LGP track shoe width. Specify the exact track shoe width when ordering shoes - LGP configurations were offered with multiple width options.
  • Engine serial. PowerTech 6090 Tier 4 internal parts must match the engine serial.
  • Aftertreatment configuration. DPF and SCR part numbers can vary across the production run.
  • Hydrostatic pump/motor variant. Drive pump and motor part numbers can vary - same options as standard 850K.
  • Blade configuration. 6-way, angle-only, and straight-blade configurations have different cylinder specifications.

Why the 850K LGP is a purpose-built pick

The 850K LGP is built for jobs where ground pressure is the deciding factor: soft-soil finish grading, wetland and forestry-floor work, slope operations, snow and ice grading, and any application where the standard 850K's narrower footprint would sink, rut, or compromise traction. For customers running production heavy-class work in these conditions, the LGP variant is the necessary configuration - not a nice-to-have option.

Maintenance priorities on an 850K LGP mirror the standard 850K: clean fuel, DEF quality, DPF service intervals, clean cool hydraulic oil, and engine rebuilds when wear demands. The LGP-specific item is the undercarriage - LGP track and roller components wear at different rates than standard-track parts because of the different ground contact pattern. Broken Tractor maintains parts coverage for both the standard 850K and the 850K LGP variant across the K-gen production run.
