Case 850M Crawler Dozer: Specs, Parts & Common Issues

Produced 2014 onward, the Case 850M is the current-production mid-large frame Case crawler dozer - FPT-built Tier 4 Final / Stage V six-cylinder turbocharged diesel with SCR + DEF aftertreatment, hydrostatic dual-path transmission, and the most refined cab and electronics in the 850 line. The M-generation builds on the L-generation Tier 4 Interim platform with the SCR + DEF emissions transition, LiveLink Pro telematics, and improved operator ergonomics.

Case 850M Crawler Dozer

The Case 850M Crawler Dozer is the current-production mid-large frame Case crawler dozer, in production from approximately 2014 onward. The M-generation continues the hydrostatic dual-path drivetrain architecture used since the 850H and moves to Tier 4 Final emissions compliance via SCR (selective catalytic reduction) + DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) aftertreatment. The 850M's engine is built by FPT (Fiat Powertrain Technologies) - the Iveco / Case IH / New Holland industrial engine group - replacing the Cummins-derived engines used on prior 850 generations.

SCR + DEF is fundamentally different from the Tier 4 Interim DPF used on the 850L. The 850M has no DPF - it uses DEF (a urea-water solution) injected into the exhaust to break down NOx instead. The trade-off is a new set of service items: DEF tank, DEF supply pump, DEF injector, NOx sensors. Cab, controls, and telematics see substantial refreshes on the M generation.

How the 850M differs from the 850L predecessor

  • Tier 4 Final SCR + DEF aftertreatment - replaces the 850L's cooled EGR + DPF. SCR uses urea (DEF) injection into the exhaust to break down NOx. Eliminates DPF ash service; adds DEF tank refill and DEF quality concerns.
  • FPT NEF six-cylinder engine - the 850M moves to the FPT NEF six-cylinder family, replacing the Cummins-derived engines used on prior generations. FPT NEF engines share architecture with the Iveco / Case IH / New Holland industrial lineup.
  • LiveLink Pro telematics - the 850M integrates Case SiteWatch / LiveLink Pro remote monitoring standard or available depending on configuration.
  • Cab refresh - improved visibility, refined HVAC, updated instrumentation panel, improved operator ergonomics.
  • Suspension seat - the 359121A1 Case / New Holland dozer suspension seat covers the broader H/K/L Case dozer family; confirm fitment by serial.

FPT NEF six-cylinder engine (Tier 4 Final / Stage V)

The 850M uses the FPT (Fiat Powertrain Technologies) NEF six-cylinder turbocharged diesel - the same engine family used on other current Case Construction machines. FPT NEF engines share architecture with the Iveco / Case IH / New Holland agricultural and industrial lineup, and parts service is supported through the FPT and Case dealer networks.

Routine engine service items: filters (engine oil, fuel, air, DEF supply filter), water pump, alternator, turbocharger. The DEF supply filter is a new service item not present on the 850L.

Tier 4 Final SCR + DEF aftertreatment

The SCR + DEF aftertreatment system has several routine service points:

DEF tank and DEF quality

The DEF tank is separate from the diesel fuel tank. Operators refill DEF on a separate schedule - DEF consumption rate is typically 3-5% of diesel consumption. DEF freezes below approximately 12°F (-11°C) and degrades when stored for extended periods or at high temperatures. Contaminated or degraded DEF causes SCR-system fault codes and reduced engine power.

DEF supply pump and DEF lines

The DEF supply pump pulls DEF from the tank, filters it, and pressurizes it for injection into the exhaust stream. Pump failure is a routine service item at production-run age, as is DEF line wear (especially the heated lines that prevent DEF freezing in cold operation).

DEF injector and SCR catalyst

The DEF injector atomizes DEF into the exhaust upstream of the SCR catalyst. Injector clogging from DEF deposits is a routine fault. The SCR catalyst itself has a long service life but does need eventual replacement.

NOx sensors

Two NOx sensors monitor exhaust before and after the SCR catalyst - they verify SCR is performing correctly. Sensor failure is routine production-run-age wear.

Hydrostatic dual-path transmission

The 850M retains the hydrostatic dual-path architecture used since the 850H. Each track has its own variable-displacement pump and hydraulic motor controlled by joystick. The M generation refines the calibration further with LiveLink telematics integration for fault reporting.

Hydrostatic service items remain consistent across H/K/L/M generations: charge pump, charge filter, hydraulic motor seals, drive pump bearings, control valve degradation.

Variants: Standard, LT, LGP

The 850M shipped in three primary track configurations:

  • Standard - standard-width track, balanced general-purpose dozing.
  • LT (Long Track) - extended-length track frame for additional flotation and stability.
  • LGP (Low Ground Pressure) - wider grouser pads and extended track frame for soft-ground / wetlands / agricultural-soil work.

Variant affects undercarriage parts. Confirm Standard vs. LT vs. LGP by serial before ordering.

Case SiteWatch / LiveLink Pro provides remote monitoring of the 850M's operational data - engine hours, fuel and DEF consumption, fault codes, location tracking, and operational analytics. Common 850M service items

DEF system service

DEF quality, DEF tank ventilation, DEF supply pump, DEF injector, and the heated DEF lines are all routine production-run-age service items. Many SCR-system fault codes trace back to DEF quality or supply problems rather than the SCR catalyst itself.

Routine filter changes

Engine oil, fuel, air, DEF supply, and hydraulic filter changes on schedule. The hydrostatic system in particular is intolerant of contamination.

NOx sensor service

NOx sensors are routine wear items.

Cab and electronics

The 850M's electronic instrumentation, joystick electronics, and LiveLink telematics modules are sophisticated and integrated. Most diagnostic codes resolve with software updates or connector service; some require dealer-level diagnostics.
