Case 850L Crawler Dozer: Specs, Parts & Common Issues
Produced 2009 - 2014, the Case 850L is the L-generation mid-large frame Case crawler dozer - Tier 4 Interim emissions, Cummins-derived turbocharged six-cylinder diesel with cooled EGR and a diesel particulate filter (DPF), and continued hydrostatic dual-path transmission. The L-generation introduced Tier 4 Interim aftertreatment to the 850 line, bringing DPF regeneration and ash service into the routine maintenance profile.
The Case 850L Crawler Dozer is the L-generation mid-large frame Case crawler dozer, produced from 2009 through 2014. The 850L continues the hydrostatic dual-path drivetrain architecture used since the 850H and steps up to Tier 4 Interim emissions compliance - adding cooled exhaust gas recirculation (cooled EGR) and a diesel particulate filter (DPF) aftertreatment to the Cummins-derived engine. DPF regeneration and ash service become routine maintenance items not present on the 850K or earlier hydrostatic 850 machines.
The 850L's cab and electronics see another refresh: improved instrumentation, refined joystick control geometry, updated HVAC, and integration with Case SiteWatch telematics on later production. The hydrostatic drivetrain calibration was further refined for low-speed grading precision.

How the 850L differs from the 850K predecessor
- Tier 4 Interim emissions - cooled EGR plus DPF added. The DPF captures soot and regenerates periodically. Both add routine service points not present on the 850K.
- Refreshed cab and electronics - improved HVAC, updated instrumentation, refined joystick control geometry.
- Updated hydrostatic drivetrain calibration - same dual-path architecture as the 850K with refined control software for low-speed grading precision.
- Blade-carrier hardware carries forward - most blade-carrier wear items continue from the 850K and 850H. Confirm by part number against your serial.
- Suspension seat carries forward - the 359121A1 suspension seat covers the 850L (full H/K/L cross-fit).
- Case SiteWatch telematics - remote monitoring integration on later production.
Variants: Standard, LT, LGP
The 850L shipped in three primary track configurations:
- Standard - standard-width track, balanced general dozing.
- LT (Long Track) - extended-length track frame for additional flotation and stability.
- LGP (Low Ground Pressure) - wider grouser pads with extended track frame for soft-ground / wetlands / agricultural-soil work.
Variant affects undercarriage parts (track pads, idlers, frame components). Confirm Standard vs. LT vs. LGP by serial before ordering.
Tier 4 Interim emissions system
The Tier 4 Interim emissions package on the 850L combines two main systems:
Cooled EGR (exhaust gas recirculation)
A portion of the exhaust is routed back through an EGR cooler, then mixed with the intake air before combustion. This reduces NOx emissions. The EGR cooler can develop internal leaks at production-run age - failure mode is coolant loss into the intake or exhaust side. EGR valve fouling and stuck conditions are also routine. EGR system codes are common on aging Tier 4i engines.
Diesel particulate filter (DPF)
The DPF captures soot particles from the exhaust. Soot accumulates in the filter substrate during normal operation; periodic regeneration burns the soot off (passive regeneration during heavy-load operation, active regeneration when the engine commands an injection cycle). Ash accumulates over time and requires DPF service / replacement / ash removal at a service interval typically measured in thousands of hours.
Both EGR and DPF service should be on a maintenance schedule for 850L owners.
Cummins-derived engine (Tier 4 Interim)
The 850L uses a Cummins-derived inline six-cylinder turbocharged diesel - the Tier 4 Interim evolution of the Cummins industrial engine family used on the 850K. Internal updates support the Tier 4 Interim emissions calibration; the base engine architecture continues the proven Cummins lineage.
Routine engine service items: filters (engine oil, fuel, air, hydraulic), water pump, alternator, turbocharger, injectors. Browse the Case Dozer Parts hub for current 850L engine service kits.
Hydrostatic dual-path transmission
The 850L retains the hydrostatic dual-path architecture from the 850H and 850K - each track has its own variable-displacement pump and hydraulic motor, controlled by joystick. The L generation refines the control software for smoother low-speed grading and finer joystick proportional response.
Hydrostatic service items: charge pump, charge filter, hydraulic motor seals, drive pump bearings, control valve degradation. Hydraulic oil cleanliness is critical - the hydrostatic system is intolerant of contamination.
Blade-carrier and operator-station cross-fit
Many 850L wear items cross-fit with the 850K below and (on a more limited basis) with the 850M above. Notable confirmed cross-fits:
- The 359121A1 Case / New Holland dozer suspension seat with headrest covers the 850L (and 550H, 650H, 650K, 650L, 750K, 750L, 850H, 850K). One SKU covers nine machines.
- Many blade-carrier slider blocks and wear plates carry forward from the H / K generations.
Common 850L service issues
DPF regeneration and ash service
Active regeneration cycles consume fuel and require a clear exhaust path. If the operator interrupts regeneration cycles frequently, soot accumulates faster than it can burn off - eventually triggering forced regeneration warnings or DPF service codes. Ash service intervals depend on operation hours and idle profile.
EGR cooler internal leaks
Internal EGR cooler leaks are a routine production-run-age failure mode. Symptoms: coolant loss with no external leak, increased coolant in the intake, or white smoke under load.
Hydrostatic transmission service
Same hydrostatic-system service profile as the 850K - charge pump, control valve, motor seal, oil contamination. Hydrostatic diagnosis usually requires dealer service tools for pressure testing.
Blade carrier wear plate replacement
Routine sacrificial service items. Many components cross-fit with the 850K.
Cutting edge wear
Cutting edge replacement is the most frequent blade-related service item. End bits wear faster than the center cutting edge.
Cab electronics
The L-generation electronic instrumentation, joystick electronics, and SiteWatch telematics modules are sophisticated and integrated. Most diagnostic codes resolve with connector service; some require dealer-level diagnostics.
