Case 850G Long Track Crawler Dozer: Specs, Parts & Common Issues
The Case 850G Long Track Crawler Dozer is the extended-track-frame variant of the G-generation mid-large frame Case crawler dozer — Cummins 6BT-derived inline six-cylinder diesel (Case 6-590 / 6T-590), power shift transmission with torque converter, and an extended track frame that delivers improved flotation and stability over the standard 850G. The G-generation continued the modernization of the 850 line in the 1990s following the 14-year 850D production run.
The Case 850G Long Track Crawler Dozer is the extended-length-track variant of the G-generation mid-large frame Case crawler dozer. The 850G generation continued the 850 line through the 1990s following the long-running 850D and short-run 850E, and introduced a refreshed chassis with the Case 6-590 / Cummins 6BT-derived inline six-cylinder engine as the standard powerplant. The Long Track (LT) variant extends the track frame for additional ground contact, improving flotation on soft ground and providing better stability during dozing operations.
The 850G LT sits between the older Case 6-cylinder / power shift architecture of the 850D and 850E and the modern hydrostatic architecture of the 850H that arrived in 2000. It's a fully modernized 1990s Case dozer with the broad Cummins 6BT parts ecosystem and the proven power shift drivetrain.

How the 850G LT differs from the standard 850G
- Extended track frame — the LT variant uses an extended-length track frame for more ground contact. This is the defining feature.
- Wider track pads typically — LT configurations often ship with wider grouser pads for additional flotation.
- Higher operating weight — the longer track frame and wider pads add 2,000+ lb to the operating weight relative to a standard 850G.
- Same engine, transmission, and hydraulics — the LT shares engine, drivetrain, and implement hydraulics with the standard 850G. Only undercarriage and frame parts are LT-specific.
Case 6-590 / Cummins 6BT engine
The 850G LT uses the Case 6-590 inline six-cylinder diesel — the Case-branded version of the Cummins 6BT, 5.9 L displacement. Turbocharged variants (6T-590) were available on higher-output configurations. The Cummins 6BT family is one of the most widely produced industrial / commercial diesel engines in history, used across Case construction equipment, Cummins industrial applications, medium-duty trucks (Dodge Ram), and agricultural machinery.
The 6BT parts ecosystem is enormous — filters, injectors, water pumps, turbochargers, gaskets, and complete rebuild components are widely available through both Case dealer and aftermarket Cummins channels. This is one of the strongest practical advantages of the 850G LT for owners and rebuilders.

Power shift transmission with torque converter
The 850G LT continues the power shift with torque converter architecture used across the 850D, 850E, and 850G family. Clutchless gear changes under load, multiple forward and reverse speeds, torque converter providing smooth power transfer. Routine service items: shift solenoids and pressure switches, clutch packs, torque converter, transmission oil cooler, transmission filter.
Long-track undercarriage
The LT undercarriage is the defining hardware of the variant. The extended-length track frame uses additional rollers and a longer track chain than the standard 850G. Track pads are typically wider grouser configurations. Track frame mounting hardware, frame structural components, and certain hydraulic line routings are LT-specific.
When ordering LT undercarriage parts, always confirm by serial. LT and Standard 850Gs are visually similar but use different track chain lengths, different roller counts, and (typically) different track pad widths.
Blade system and hydraulics
The 850G LT ships with a 6-way bulldozer blade — angle and tilt control hydraulically actuated. Blade cylinders, blade-carrier slider blocks, and cutting edges are routine service items. Cutting edge replacement is generally needed every few hundred to few thousand hours of dozing depending on material and operator habit.
The 850G generation introduced refined hydraulic valving and improved cylinder seal designs relative to the 850D / 850E. Seal kit availability for the blade cylinders is generally good, with aftermarket kits supporting most 850G-era cylinder dimensions.
Common 850G LT service items
Engine accessory aging
Water pump, alternator, starter, injection pump, and (on turbocharged 6T-590 configurations) turbocharger are routinely rebuilt or replaced over the engine's service life. The Cummins 6BT parts ecosystem makes service economical.
Power shift / torque converter service
Shift solenoid failure, clutch pack wear, torque converter degradation, transmission oil cooler service. Transmission filter and fluid on a scheduled service interval.
Hydraulic seal failure
Blade cylinder seal failures are routine at production-run age. Cylinder rod chrome corrosion and seal weep are typical symptoms. Seal kit rebuilds address most cases; severe rod corrosion requires rod replacement.
LT undercarriage wear
The longer track configuration on the LT sees particular wear on idler bushings and roller bearings due to the additional track length. Track chain elongation is a routine measurement on field-service-age LTs.
Operator station and ROPS
Cab and canopy hardware, seat cushion replacement, and floorboard wear are typical aging-machine issues. ROPS structural integrity should be verified before resale.
Wiring and electrical
25-plus-year-old wiring harnesses can develop intermittent issues from connector corrosion and insulation aging.

The 850G LT is the extended-track variant of the G-generation mid-large frame Case crawler dozer. The G-generation is the last 850 to use power shift transmission — the H-generation in 2000 introduced hydrostatic dual-path drivetrain. Predecessor to the G is the Case 850E (1987–1990, short E-generation run) and the long-running Case 850D (1980–1994). Successor is the Case 850H (2000–2003, hydrostatic).
