Case 850E Crawler Dozer: Specs, Parts & Common Issues

Produced 1987 – 1990, the Case 850E is the short-run E-generation mid-large frame Case crawler dozer — Case 6-590 inline six-cylinder diesel (Cummins 6BT-derived), power shift transmission with torque converter, and an updated operator station over the 850C / 850D predecessors. The 850E bridges the long-running 850D and the modernized 850G, representing the transitional period when the Cummins 6BT engine family fully replaced the older Case A336 across the 850 line.

Case 850E Crawler Dozer

The Case 850E Crawler Dozer is the short-run E-generation mid-large frame Case crawler dozer, produced from 1987 through 1990. The 850E was produced concurrently with the late 850C and continuing 850D production — the E-generation introduced standardization on the Case 6-590 (Cummins 6BT-derived) inline six-cylinder engine and brought refinements to the operator station and hydraulics. The 850E served as a transition between the 850D's long production window and the 850G's mid-1990s modernization.

For owners and operators today, the 850E is a relatively rare machine in the field due to its short three-year production run. But the parts ecosystem is broad: the 850E shares chassis components with the 850D, undercarriage with the 850D / 850G, and engine architecture with the rest of the post-1985 850 / 855 family using the Case 6-590 / Cummins 6BT engine.

The 850E is the transition machine The 850E is sandwiched between the long-running 850D (1980–1994) and the modernized 850G (mid-1990s). Production overlap with the 850D means individual machines from this era can be either D or E generation depending on serial — confirm by your serial plate. The 850E standardized on the Cummins 6BT-derived Case 6-590 engine and introduced operator-station and hydraulic refinements that carried forward into the 850G.

How the 850E differs from the 850D

  • Engine standardized on Case 6-590 — where the 850D's 14-year production spanned the A336-to-6-590 engine transition, the 850E standardized on the Cummins 6BT-derived Case 6-590. All 850E units use the 6-590 — no A336 variants. This simplifies engine-parts sourcing for 850E owners.
  • Refined operator station — improved ROPS canopy, updated control layout, better visibility, refined seat mount.
  • Updated hydraulic valving — refined open-center hydraulics with improved valve response.
  • Updated accessory packaging — alternator, starter, and accessory belt routing updated.
  • Same power shift drivetrain — drivetrain architecture unchanged from late-production 850D, providing parts continuity.

Case 6-590 / Cummins 6BT engine

The 850E uses the Case 6-590 inline six-cylinder diesel exclusively — the Case-branded version of the Cummins 6BT, 5.9 L displacement. The Cummins 6BT family is one of the most widely produced industrial / commercial diesel engines in history, used across Case construction equipment, Cummins industrial applications, medium-duty trucks (including the Dodge Ram diesel from 1989 onward), and agricultural machinery.

The 6BT parts ecosystem is enormous — filters, injectors, water pumps, turbochargers, gaskets, and complete rebuild components are widely available through both Case dealer and aftermarket Cummins channels. For an 850E owner doing an engine rebuild, the 6BT parts availability is a significant practical advantage compared to less-common Case industrial engines.

Power shift transmission with torque converter

The 850E uses the same power shift with torque converter as the late-production 850D. Clutchless gear changes under load, multiple forward and reverse speeds, torque converter providing smooth power transfer. Routine service items: shift solenoids and pressure switches, clutch packs, torque converter, transmission oil cooler, transmission filter.

The torque converter is a routine rebuild item on high-hour 850Es. Symptoms of transmission service needs include shift hesitation, slipping under load, or harsh engagement.

Undercarriage

The 850E undercarriage shares component cross-fit with the 850D family. Sprocket bolt patterns, idler geometries, master pin dimensions, and roller designs cross-fit on multiple components — confirm by part number against your serial. Track chain, roller, idler, and sprocket are all routine wear items at production-run age.

Blade system and hydraulics

The 850E ships with a 6-way bulldozer blade — angle and tilt control hydraulically actuated. Blade cylinders, blade-carrier slider blocks, and cutting edges are routine service items. Cutting edge replacement is generally needed every few hundred to few thousand hours of dozing depending on material and operator habit.

The 850E introduced refined hydraulic valving relative to the 850D — improved valve response and updated cylinder seal designs. Seal kit availability for the blade cylinders is generally good, with aftermarket kits supporting most 850E-era cylinder dimensions.

Variants: Standard, LGP

The 850E shipped in two primary track configurations:

  • Standard — standard-width track, balanced general dozing.
  • LGP (Low Ground Pressure) — wider grouser pads and extended track frame for soft-ground / wetlands / agricultural-soil work.

Track configuration affects undercarriage and frame parts. Confirm Standard vs. LGP by serial before ordering.

Common 850E service items

Engine accessory aging

Water pump, alternator, starter, injection pump on the Cummins 6BT-derived 6-590 are routinely rebuilt or replaced over the engine's service life. The Cummins 6BT parts ecosystem makes service economical.

Power shift / torque converter service

Shift solenoid failure, clutch pack wear, torque converter degradation, transmission oil cooler service. The transmission filter and fluid should be on a scheduled service interval.

Hydraulic seal failure

Blade cylinder seal failures are common at production-run age. Cylinder rod chrome corrosion and seal weep are typical symptoms.

Undercarriage replacement cycles

Track chains, rollers, idlers, and sprockets all have measurable wear lives. Modern aftermarket undercarriage is available for the 850E family.

Operator station and ROPS

Cab and canopy hardware, seat cushion replacement, and floorboard wear are typical aging-machine issues. ROPS structural integrity should be verified before resale.

Wiring and electrical

35-plus-year-old wiring harnesses are routinely brittle. Hard starts, intermittent gauges, and dim lights are often traced to harness corrosion or insulation failure rather than the underlying component.

Why the 850E is worth keeping in service

The 850E benefits from the Cummins 6BT-derived 6-590 engine — one of the most-supported industrial diesels in production history. The power shift drivetrain is simpler to troubleshoot than the hydrostatic systems on the later 850H / K / L / M. The chassis is proven from the 850D's long production run. For commercial dirt work, agricultural site prep, private road maintenance, and major land-clearing, an 850E in good mechanical condition remains a productive and supportable machine.
