Case 590 Super M Backhoe Loader: Specs, Parts & Common Issues
Produced 2001 – 2008, the 590 Super M is the larger-frame turbocharged M-generation Construction King — Case 445T/M Series I → 445T/M2 Series II → FPT/Iveco F4HE Series III progression on a substantially larger chassis than the 580 Super M, ~108 HP gross. Same engine and drivetrain architecture as the 580 Super M; the 590 distinction is physical iron — heavier frame, stronger backhoe, larger loader.
The Case 590 Super M is the larger-frame turbocharged version of the M-generation Construction King backhoe loader. It came to market in 2001 alongside the 580 Super M, ran through 2008, and brought the same Case 445T/M Series I → 445T/M2 Series II → FPT/Iveco F4HE9484 Series III engine progression that the 580 Super M used — but on a substantially larger chassis with stronger backhoe iron, larger loader frame, and heavier counterweight. Output is approximately 108 HP gross — modestly higher than the 580 Super M.
For owners maintaining a 590 Super M today, the most useful single fact is the deep parts cross-fit with the 580 Super M on shared systems and with the 590 Super L on shared chassis items. The 590 Super L predecessor uses the same backhoe boom, dipper, loader frame, and many hydraulic cylinders as the 590 Super M, while the 580 Super M shares the engine, transmission, and cab. That two-direction cross-fit broadens parts availability substantially.

How the 590 Super M differs from the 580 Super M
The 590 Super M and 580 Super M share the engine, transmission base architecture, brakes, and cab. The 590 distinction is the chassis and iron:
- Larger frame and heavier operating weight — ~17,500–19,500 lb vs. 580 Super M's ~15,500–17,000 lb.
- Stronger backhoe — larger boom, longer dipper stick options, heavier swing tower. The 140965A1 dipper cylinder, 175785A1 boom cylinder, and 296434A1 bucket cylinder are all 590-specific (cross-fit 590 Super L).
- Larger loader bucket and frame — heavier loader frame. The 133936A1 loader lift cylinder is 590-specific.
- Hydraulic pump — the 257955A1 590-specific 17-spline pump. The 580 Super M uses 87433897.
- Power output — 590 Super M ~108 HP gross vs. 580 Super M ~108 HP gross (very close — the 590's gain is mainly in working torque under load due to the heavier chassis).
- Same engine family — 445T/M Series I → 445T/M2 Series II → F4HE Series III progression on both machines.
- Same transmission options — Power Shuttle standard; Powershift option available on Series II/III.
How the 590 Super M differs from the 590 Super L
The 590 Super M is the M-generation successor to the 590 Super L. The key changes:
- Engine family change — the 590 Super L used the Cummins 4T-390 (3.9 L turbo). The 590 Super M switches to the larger Case 445T/M family (4.5 L turbo). More displacement, more torque, more cylinder pressure.
- Same chassis — backhoe boom, dipper stick, loader frame, and most cylinder hardware carry forward from the 590 Super L. The 175785A1 boom cylinder, 140965A1 dipper cylinder, 133936A1 loader lift cylinder, and 296434A1 bucket cylinder all cross-fit 590 Super L and 590 Super M.
- Same L-generation cab — refined for the M-series but architecturally the same as the Super L.
- Same wet-disc brakes — wet-disc multi-plate brake architecture continues.
- Series II Powershift continues — the Powershift transmission option introduced on 590 Super L Series II carries forward to 590 Super M Series II/III.
Series I / II / III engine progression
Three Series of running engine and emissions updates:
- Series I (2001 – 2004) — Case 445T/M turbo. Standard Power Shuttle transmission.
- Series II (2004 – 2007) — 445T/M2 with Tier 2 emissions. Powershift transmission option becomes available. The CS-590SM-II-FK filter kit covers Series II machines (also fits 580 Super N).
- Series III (2008) — single-year transition to the FPT/Iveco F4HE9484 4.5L Tier 3 Common-Rail engine. The 87546291 A/C condenser is Series III-specific (cross-fits 580 Super M Series III).
Confirm Series by serial number before ordering engine-related parts. Filter kits, fuel system components, ECU, and certain electronic items differ between Series.
Powershift transmission (Series II/III option)
The Powershift transmission becomes available as a factory option starting on Series II 590 Super M machines. The Powershift offers clutch-free shifting under load with electronic clutch control. The standard Power Shuttle remains available on all three Series.
If your 590 Super M has the Powershift option and shifting becomes erratic, the controller and wiring harness are the most common service items. Mechanical Powershift internals are durable.

Common issues and what to expect
Series I vs Series II vs Series III parts ordering
Filter kits, fuel system components, ECU, and certain cab and HVAC items differ between Series. Always confirm Series by serial number. The 87546291 A/C condenser is Series III-specific. The CS-590SM-II-FK filter kit is Series II-specific.
Turbocharger wear
The 4.5L turbocharger is the most common engine-service item. Symptoms: blue smoke, oil consumption, audible whine, shaft play. Series III F4HE machines use a slightly different turbo configuration than Series I/II 445T/M.
Bushing wear
The 100522A1 bushing wears at multiple pivot points across the loader and backhoe. Stock a few.
Hydraulic cylinder seal failure
The 179011A1 dipper cylinder seal kit and 297895A1 bucket cylinder seal kit are the major seal kits. The CS-SK-7 590 Super M-specific multi-cylinder seal kit package bundles them with boom and stabilizer seal kits.
Dipper, boom, and bucket cylinder wear
The 590-specific cylinders — 140965A1 dipper cylinder, 175785A1 boom cylinder, 296434A1 bucket cylinder, 133936A1 loader lift cylinder — all cross-fit 590 Super L. Routine wear and rebuild items.
Cab glass
The 394700A1 Series I 2-door cab upper RH door glass cross-fits 580M, 580 Super M, and 590 Super M Series I.
Brake service
The 243894A1 brake service kit covers the wet-disc brake rebuild for 590 Super L and 590 Super M.
Hydraulic pump and tank
The 257955A1 hydraulic pump is the 590-specific 17-spline pump. The 87429272 hydraulic reservoir tank covers the late L / early M generation tank configuration.

Request a PartWhere the 590 Super M sits in the Construction King family
The 590 Super M is the M-generation larger-frame turbocharged Construction King backhoe loader. It runs alongside the 580 Super M (same engine, smaller chassis). Before the 590 Super M came the 590 Super L with the Cummins 4T-390 engine on the same chassis. After the 590 Super M came the 590 Super N (2008–present), which carried the F4HE Series III engine forward and added FPT NEF Tier 3 and F5BFL Tier 4 Final engines over its run.
