Case 580M Backhoe Loader: Specs, Parts & Common Issues
Produced 2001 - 2008, the 580M is the naturally aspirated M-generation Construction King - replacing the Cummins 4-390 with the Case 445T/M-derived 4.5-liter four-cylinder diesel and running through three Series (I, II, III) that brought engine refinements, Tier 2 emissions compliance, and finally the Iveco F4HE9484 4.5L Tier 3 engine. The M generation kept the 17-spline hydraulic pump from the 580L and shared most non-engine service items with both the 580L and the turbocharged 580 Super M.
The Case 580M is the naturally aspirated M-generation Construction King small-frame backhoe loader. It came to market in 2001, replacing the 580L, and ran through 2008 alongside the turbocharged 580 Super M. The defining 580M change vs. the 580L is the engine: Case retired the Cummins 4-390 in favor of the Case 445T/M family - a 4.5-liter four-cylinder diesel built on a Cummins-derived block but branded and calibrated as Case. The 580M ran through three production phases (Series I, Series II, and Series III) that brought running engine refinements and Tier 2 / Tier 3 emissions updates.
For owners maintaining a 580M today, two facts are essential. First, the 17-spline hydraulic pump shaft introduced on the 580L continues unchanged into the 580M - the 257953A1 hydraulic pump labeled "580L, 580M" is a routine high-cycle wear item and works on both machines. Second, most chassis service items - cab glass, pin and bushing kits, ring and pinion sets, dipper and boom cylinders, stabilizer cylinders - cross-fit between the 580M and the L-generation predecessor, and many also cross to the 580 Super M (which differs only in engine and supporting systems).

Series I / II / III engine progression
The 580M ran through three Series with running engine and emissions updates:
- Series I (2001 - ~2004) - Case 445T/M 4.5L four-cylinder naturally aspirated diesel. Pre-Tier 2 emissions. The 393569A1 Series I non-turbo muffler is Series I-specific and also fits the 570MXT loader landscaper of the same era.
- Series II (~2004 - 2007) - Case 445T/M2 with Tier 2 emissions calibration. The optional Powershift transmission becomes available alongside the standard Power Shuttle. The 45-574939 Series II 4WD transmission rebuild kit is Series II-specific.
- Series III (2008) - Single-year transition with the FPT/Iveco F4HE9484 4.5L Tier 3 engine. Common-rail injection, electronic engine management. Same engine that continues onto the 580N. Some parts diverge from Series I/II at this point.
Confirming Series before ordering engine-related parts is essential - the three Series have different filter requirements, injection systems, and ECU configurations.
How the 580M differs from the 580 Super M
The 580M and 580 Super M share their chassis, transmission base architecture, axles, brakes, hydraulics, cab, and most loader and backhoe iron. The differences are in the engine and supporting systems:
- Engine - 580M uses naturally aspirated variants; Super M uses turbocharged versions (445T/M turbo Series I, 445T/M2 turbo Series II, F4HE turbo Series III). The block family is the same but the turbo's stronger internals (connecting rods, pistons, head) differ.
- Power output - 580M approximately 80 HP net / 88 HP gross; 580 Super M 99 HP net / 108 HP gross. Super M has substantially more low-end torque under load.
- Muffler - 580M Series I uses 393569A1; Super M uses turbo-specific exhaust.
- Filter kits - Super M Series I uses CS-580SMT-FK; Super M Series II uses CS-580SM-II-FK; 580M uses different non-turbo filter configurations.
- Cooling - slightly larger or higher-flow cooling on the Super M to handle the turbo's heat load.
Everything else - drivetrain, chassis, brakes, cab, loader, and backhoe - interchanges with the Super M. Many parts labeled "580M, 580 Super M" or "580L, 580M, 580SL, 580SM" in our catalog fit both.
How the 580M differs from the 580L
The 580M is an engine-and-emissions update of the 580L rather than a clean-sheet redesign. The chassis, hydraulics, cab, and drivetrain architecture all carry forward from the L generation with refinements. The notable changes:
- Engine - Case 445T/M 4.5L replaces the Cummins 4-390 3.9L. Displacement up, power up modestly.
- Same 17-spline hydraulic pump - the 257953A1 pump used on the 580L continues unchanged into the 580M. Parts cross-fit cleanly.
- Same wet-disc brakes - wet-disc multi-plate brakes continue from the L generation.
- Powershift transmission becomes available - Series II onward offers the optional Powershift alongside the standard Power Shuttle.
- Cab refinements - L-generation cab architecture continues with M-series detail updates including the 411909A1 (left) and 411908A1 (right) window latches that are 580M-specific service items.
The Case 445T/M engine family
The Case 445T/M is a 4.5-liter four-cylinder diesel built on a Cummins-derived block but branded and calibrated as a Case engine. The 4.5L displacement is a meaningful increase over the 580L's Cummins 4-390 (3.9 L) - more torque under load and improved low-rpm pulling power. Series I uses the Tier 1 / pre-Tier 2 calibration; Series II shifts to Tier 2 (designated 445T/M2); Series III adopts the FPT/Iveco F4HE9484 with Common-Rail injection and electronic engine management for Tier 3 compliance.
The Cummins-derived lower end means many engine internals source through the broader Cummins B-series parts ecosystem in addition to Case channels. Pistons, rings, bearings, head gasket sets, water pumps, and oil pumps are widely available.

Common issues and what to expect
Hydraulic cylinder seal failure
The 175251A1 bucket tilt cylinder seal kit and CS-SK-3B 580M seal kit package are the two most-replaced 580M parts. Common service item: 15-plus-year-old seals on the loader and backhoe cylinders dry out and weep.
Hydraulic pump wear
The 257953A1 17-spline pump wears over time. Symptoms: lazy boom and dipper, weak stabilizers, longer cycle times under load.
Series II 4WD transmission service
The 45-574939 Series II 4WD Carraro transmission rebuild kit is a routine service item for Series II 4WD machines. Symptoms: harsh shifts, slow direction changes, slipping under load.
Bucket and dipper cylinder wear
The 128760A1-R rebuilt bucket cylinder and 233114A2 dipper cylinder are routine replacement items. The bucket cylinder cycles every loader operation; the dipper cylinder cycles every dig.
Swing tower wear
The 326806A1-KIT swing tower pin and bushing kit covers the wear items at the swing tower interfaces. Symptoms: slop in the boom under load, audible knock during swing reversals.
Stabilizer cylinder wear
The 195503A1 and 195504A1 stabilizer cylinders are routine replacement items.
Cab glass and window latch wear
The 411909A1 and 411908A1 window latches are 580M-specific service items that wear with regular use.
Engine wear (Series-specific)
The 445T/M family is durable. Common items on 15-plus-year-old engines: head gasket failure, injector wear, water pump shaft wear. Series III F4HE machines have additional electronic engine management items that require dealer-tool diagnosis when faults appear.
Working on a Case 580M?
The 580M shares most service parts with the 580L predecessor and the 580 Super M sibling, with engine differences being the primary distinction across Series I/II/III. Our parts specialists can verify Series and naturally aspirated vs. turbo fitment by serial number.

The 580M is the M-generation naturally aspirated Construction King small-frame backhoe loader. It sat alongside the turbocharged 580 Super M from 2001 through 2008. Above it in the M generation sat the larger-frame 590 Super M. Before the 580M came the 580L with the Cummins 4-390 engine; after the 580M came the 580N (2008-present) with the FPT NEF engine family, which carried forward from the 580M Series III F4HE.
