Case 580 Super M Backhoe Loader: Specs, Parts & Common Issues
Produced 2001 – 2008, the 580 Super M is the turbocharged M-generation Construction King — Case 445T/M turbocharged 4.5-liter four-cylinder running through three Series (I, II, III) with progressively tighter emissions, Powershift transmission option from Series II.
The Case 580 Super M is the turbocharged version of the M-generation Construction King small-frame backhoe loader. It came to market in 2001 alongside the naturally aspirated 580M and ran through 2008. The Super M uses the turbocharged 445T/M family in three progressive Series: Series I (2001–2004) with the base 445T/M turbo, Series II (2004–2007) with the Tier 2 445T/M2, and Series III (2008) with the FPT/Iveco F4HE9484 4.5L Tier 3 engine. Output across the Series runs approximately 99 HP net / 108 HP gross — substantially more low-end torque than the 580M's naturally aspirated power band.
For owners maintaining a 580 Super M today, two facts matter most. First, the 237025A1 and 237026A1 springs are routine high-cycle replacements. Second, the Series I / II / III split is the most consequential parts-ordering distinction — engine, filter kits, transmission options, and certain cab and electronics items differ between Series.

Series I / II / III — what differs and how to identify yours
The three Series brought running engine, emissions, transmission, and electronics updates:
- Series I (2001 – 2004) — Case 445T/M turbo, base emissions calibration. CS-580SMT-FK filter kit. 144200A1 boom cylinder. Standard Power Shuttle transmission only. 394700A1 upper door window RH is Series I 2-door cab specific.
- Series II (2004 – 2007) — 445T/M2 with Tier 2 emissions. CS-580SM-II-FK filter kit. 87711763 boom cylinder takes over from the Series I 144200A1. Powershift transmission option becomes available. 338424A1 Super M II LH rear quarter glass is Series II-specific TVH-cab glass.
- Series III (2008) — single-year transition to the FPT/Iveco F4HE9484 4.5L Tier 3 engine with Common-Rail injection and electronic engine management. 87546291 A/C condenser is Series III-specific. Wide-track rear-end configuration option appears.
The 87711763 boom cylinder labeled "580 Super M Series II & III" cleanly demarcates the Series II/III boundary from Series I (which uses the 144200A1). The same Series-II/III continuation applies to several other components.
How the Super M differs from the 580M
The Super M and 580M share their chassis, transmission base architecture, axles, brakes, hydraulics, cab, and most loader and backhoe iron. Many parts cross-fit cleanly between the two. The differences:
- Engine — Super M uses turbocharged variants (445T/M turbo Series I, 445T/M2 turbo Series II, F4HE turbo Series III); 580M uses naturally aspirated versions of the same blocks.
- Turbocharger — only on the Super M.
- Power output — Super M approximately 99 HP net / 108 HP gross; 580M approximately 80 HP net / 88 HP gross.
- Muffler and exhaust — Super M uses turbo-specific exhaust; 580M uses the 393569A1 non-turbo muffler.
- Filter kits — Super M Series I CS-580SMT-FK; Super M Series II CS-580SM-II-FK; 580M uses non-turbo filter sets.
- Boom cylinder — Super M Series I uses 144200A1; Series II/III uses 87711763. 580M uses the 189653A2 cylinder.
- Dipper cylinder — Super M uses 183795A3 (cross-fits Super L); 580M uses 233114A2.
- Hydraulic pump — Super M uses 257954A1 (cross-fits Super L); 580M uses 257953A1. Both pumps are 17-spline.
The Case 445T/M turbocharged engine family
The Case 445T/M is a Cummins-derived 4.5-liter four-cylinder with a wastegated turbocharger. The Cummins B-series block provides strong cross-source parts availability for engine internals — pistons, rings, bearings, head gasket sets, water pumps, and oil pumps. The Series I (445T/M), Series II (445T/M2 Tier 2), and Series III (FPT F4HE Tier 3) engines share many internal components but differ in calibration, injection systems, and after-treatment.
The Series III F4HE introduces Common-Rail injection and electronic engine management for Tier 3 compliance. This adds ECU and sensor components that didn't exist on Series I/II machines and that require dealer-tool diagnosis when faults appear. Series I and Series II machines run a more traditional Bosch in-line injection pump architecture.
Powershift transmission (Series II/III option)
The Super M Series II introduced an optional Powershift transmission alongside the standard Power Shuttle. The Powershift delivers clutch-free shifting under load with electronic clutch control and direction changes managed by the ECU. The Power Shuttle remained the standard transmission on all three Series.
If your Super M has the Powershift option, the transmission control electronics are the most common service item. Mechanical Powershift components are durable; controller failures or wiring harness issues account for most service complaints.

Common issues and what to expect
Series I vs Series II vs Series III parts ordering
The single most common parts-ordering mistake on a Super M is ordering the wrong-Series part. The 144200A1 Series I boom cylinder and 87711763 Series II/III boom cylinder are not interchangeable. Filter kits differ. Some cab glass and HVAC items are Series-specific. Always confirm Series by serial number.
Turbocharger wear
The 4.5L turbocharger is the most common engine-service item that distinguishes the Super M from the naturally aspirated 580M. Symptoms: blue smoke at startup or under throttle, oil consumption, audible whine, visible shaft play.
Hydraulic cylinder seal failure
The CS-SK-4 580SL/SM cylinder seal kit package covers boom, stabilizer, swing, and bucket cylinder seals in one bundle. The 183795A3 dipper cylinder is the highest-cycle hydraulic component on the backhoe — replace when the cylinder weeps or loses holding pressure.
Cab glass cracking
The Super M's cab glass is a routine service category — the 338425A1 RH rear quarter, 87434783 rear center, 338424A1 Series II LH quarter, and 338426A1 driver-side lower door glass all see consistent replacement. Glass cracks from vibration as the rubber seals dry out.
Boom and swing tower wear
The 87611723 boom and swing tower rubber bumper is a routine wear item — the rubber cushion that protects the boom-to-tower contact during transport.
Brake service
The 243900N1 late-style brake service kit covers wet-disc brake rebuild. Includes 4× 237021A1 brake discs. Use when wet-disc brakes lose holding pressure after 6,000–8,000 hours of service.
Series III-specific A/C condenser
If your Super M is a Series III, the 87546291 A/C condenser is the Series III-specific replacement. Series I/II machines use a different condenser configuration.
Powershift transmission service (Series II/III option)
If your Super M Series II or III has the Powershift, the electronic controller is the most common service item when shifting becomes erratic. Mechanical components are durable.

Request a PartWhere the 580 Super M sits in the Construction King family
The 580 Super M is the M-generation turbocharged Construction King small-frame backhoe loader. It sat alongside the naturally aspirated 580M from 2001 through 2008. Above it sat the larger-frame 590 Super M (same engine family, larger chassis). Before the Super M came the Super L with the Cummins 4T-390 engine. After the Super M came the 580 Super N (2008–present), which carried the Series III F4HE Iveco engine forward into the N generation and added the FPT NEF Tier 3 and F5BFL413C Tier 4 Final engines over its run.
