Case 450C Crawler Dozer: Specs, Parts & Common Issues

Produced 1989 – 1998, the Case 450C is the C-generation small-class crawler dozer that replaced the long-running 450B. Step up from the earlier 207 cubic-inch Case diesel to the Cummins-derived Case 4-390 3.9L four-cylinder — 65 net horsepower / 70 gross — paired with a 4-speed power shuttle transmission and refined operator station. The 450C ran for nearly a decade and remains popular for grading, backfilling, and light land-clearing applications today.

Case 450C Crawler Dozer — Case 4-390 Cummins-derived 3.9L, 1989–1998

The Case 450C Crawler Dozer is the C-generation successor to the 450B in Case's small-class dozer line. It came to market in 1989, replacing the 450B (1978–1983) after a roughly six-year gap, and ran through 1998. The defining 450C change is the engine: Case retired the 207 cubic inch four-cylinder used on the 450B and replaced it with the Case 4-390 — a 239 cubic inch (3.9 L) four-cylinder direct-injection diesel built on the Cummins 4BT block but branded and calibrated as a Case engine. Output is rated at 65 horsepower net / 70 horsepower gross at 2,000 rpm, with 194 lb-ft of peak torque at 1,200 rpm.

For owners maintaining a 450C today, the engine's Cummins B-series lineage is the most useful single fact: pistons, rings, bearings, head gasket sets, water pumps, and oil pumps source readily through both Case-branded and broader Cummins B-series industrial channels. The CS-450C-FK filter maintenance kit bundles routine service filters for the non-turbo engine.

Naturally aspirated, not turbocharged The Case 450C runs the naturally aspirated Case 4-390 (also designated 4BT 3.9L in Cummins-family nomenclature). Some online listings reference a turbocharged 450C with 95 HP — this likely reflects engine-swapped machines or confused listings. Factory production-spec 450Cs run the non-turbo 4-390 at 65 HP net / 70 HP gross. Confirm engine configuration by serial number and turbo presence before ordering engine-specific service items.

How the 450C differs from the 450B

The 450C is a meaningful platform refresh over the 450B rather than a minor evolution:

  • Engine family change — 450B used the Case 207 (3.4 L); 450C uses the Case 4-390 / 4BT (3.9 L). Larger displacement, Cummins-derived block, broader aftermarket parts ecosystem.
  • Power shuttle vs. power shift — 450C uses a 4-speed power shuttle (hydraulically actuated direction changes); 450B used a 4-speed power shift with torque converter. Different transmission architectures with different service paths.
  • Hydraulic pressure increase — 450C runs at 2,500 psi vs. the 450B's 1,650 psi. Higher pressure with lower flow (15 gpm vs. 21 gpm) means smaller cylinders deliver comparable force.
  • Operating weight — 450C is approximately 10,000–11,000 lb vs. the 450B's 11,400 lb — slightly lighter despite the larger engine, reflecting frame and undercarriage refinements.
  • Refined operator station — updated cab and controls compared to the 450B.
  • Some undercarriage cross-fit — the AT36391 track adjuster rod covers 450, 450B, 450C, 450D, 450E, 550, 550A, 550B — undercarriage components remain heavily cross-fit across the 450/550 family.

The Case 4-390 engine

The Case 4-390 is the naturally aspirated version of the Cummins 4BT 3.9L industrial four-cylinder diesel. Same 239 cubic inch displacement, same 4.02 × 4.72 in bore-stroke geometry that defines the Cummins B-series engine family — the same family that powers everything from Dodge Ram pickups (the 4BT was the smaller sibling of the famous 5.9L 6BT) to industrial generators, marine pumps, and a wide range of construction equipment.

That broad industrial-engine ecosystem means the 450C's engine internals are well-supported in the aftermarket. Pistons, rings, bearings, head gasket sets, water pumps, oil pumps, fuel system components, and many valve train items cross-source through Cummins 4BT service channels in addition to Case-branded parts. For routine service, the CS-450C-FK filter maintenance kit bundles the engine oil, fuel, air, and hydraulic filters — explicitly labeled for the non-turbo engine.

Power shuttle transmission

The 450C's 4-speed power shuttle is hydraulically actuated — the operator changes direction by moving a shuttle control, and clutch packs engage to reverse the direction of travel without manipulating a clutch pedal. Four forward and four reverse speeds give the operator flexibility for grading work where precise speed control matters.

Common service items: clutch packs wear with age, the shuttle valve gets sticky, and the torque converter charge pump weakens over time. The N13044 rebuilt torque converter (cross-fits 450C and 550) is the verified drop-in replacement when the original converter is past piecemeal rebuild.

Final drives

The 450C's outboard-planetary final drives have a known wear pattern at the planet bearings and hub seals. The G104180-KIT final drive bearing and seal kit covers both the 450C dozer and the 455C crawler loader, which shares its final drive with the 450C.

Blade configurations

The standard 450C blade is 74 inches wide with a 1.3 cubic yard capacity. The R47535 blade frame bracket covers standard-track 450C configurations; long-track variants use a different bracket. Confirm machine configuration before ordering blade hardware.

Cooling system

The A171555 cooling fan (push-type, 6-blade) is the verified replacement for the 450C and 455C. The A172489 muffler with spark arrester is the non-turbo exhaust component — cross-fits 450C, 455C, 550, 550E, and 550G. Required for any 450C operating in fire-restricted areas.

Common issues and what to expect

Filter service for the 4-390 engine

The Case 4-390 / Cummins 4BT engine is durable but depends on regular filter service. The CS-450C-FK filter kit covers oil, fuel, air, and hydraulic filters in one package. Use only on non-turbo machines.

Hydraulic leaks

Blade angle, tilt, and ripper cylinder seals all degrade with age. The 1543250C1 blade lift cylinder seal kit covers the lift cylinder; contact our parts team for angle and tilt cylinder seal options on the 450C.

Steering clutch wear

Symptoms: one track engages slower than the other under load, machine pulls toward one side during straight-line dozing. Steering clutch adjustment is the first diagnostic step; replacement requires splitting the final drive housing.

Power shuttle slipping

The 4-speed power shuttle's clutch packs wear with age. Symptoms: harsh forward-to-reverse changes, slow direction engagement, slipping under heavy push. Check power shuttle hydraulic pressure first; rebuild the clutch packs or replace the N13044 reman torque converter if the converter is degraded.

Final drive seal leaks

Gear oil weeping at the sprocket hub indicates final drive seal failure. The G104180-KIT final drive bearing and seal kit covers the rebuild components.

Cooling system service

30-plus-year-old radiator cores corrode internally. The A171555 6-blade cooling fan is the verified fan replacement. Inspect coolant hoses and water pump at major service intervals.

Track adjuster and undercarriage wear

Standard wear pattern: recoil spring fatigue, idler bushing wear, sprocket chord wear from chain elongation. The AT36391 adjuster rod and 187916A2 recoil spring are the standard service items.

Where the 450C sits in the Case dozer family

The 450C is the small-class Case crawler dozer for the late 1980s and 1990s. Above it sits the Case 550 and the larger 550E / 550G machines. The 455C is the crawler loader variant of the same chassis — same engine, same drivetrain, with a loader bucket in place of the dozer blade. Many parts cross between 450C and 455C. Before the 450C came the 450B (1978–1983) with the smaller Case 207 engine and 4-speed power shift transmission. After the 450C, Case continued the line with the 450D, 450E, and beyond.
