Case 1150 Crawler Dozer: Specs, Parts & Common Issues

The original Case 1150 Crawler Dozer is the large-frame entry in the Case crawler dozer family — Case A451B inline six-cylinder diesel, power shift transmission with torque converter, and a chassis that sits above the 850 family and below the 1450 in the original Case construction dozer lineup. Predecessor to the long-running 1150B (1973–1984), 1150C, 1150D, and the modern G / H / K / L / M generations.

Case 1150 Crawler Dozer

The Case 1150 Crawler Dozer is the original large-frame Case crawler dozer, produced through the late 1960s and into the early 1970s before being succeeded by the long-running Case 1150B in 1973. The original 1150 sits above the Case 850 in the Case construction dozer line of that era and below the Case 1450, making it the first machine in the “large-frame” 1150-class lineage. The original 1150 set the chassis pattern that the 1150B refined and the long 1150D production extended through 1990.

The 1150 family is one of the largest in the Case dozer line The 1150 model line spans roughly 50 years across many sub-generations: original 1150 (late 1960s–early 1970s), 1150B (1973–1984), 1150C (1978–1983), 1150D (1983–1990), 1150E Long Track, 1150G (1995–2004), 1150H (1995–2004), 1150K (2007–2013), 1150L, and 1150M (2013–present). When sourcing parts, confirm which 1150 generation you're working on — parts that look interchangeable across the family often are not.

Engine: Case A451B inline 6-cylinder

The original Case 1150 uses the Case A451B inline six-cylinder diesel engine — 451 cubic inches of displacement (approximately 7.4 liters), naturally aspirated configuration. The A451 series is the larger Case 6-cyl diesel of the late 1960s and early 1970s, used across larger Case industrial and agricultural applications of the era. Approximately 105 horsepower flywheel in 1150-class trim.

The A451 engine ecosystem is broad — accessory parts (water pump, alternator, starter, oil pump) share with other Case industrial 6-cyl applications of the era. Injection pump and injector service is well-documented. Cylinder kits, bearings, and complete engine overhaul parts are available through both Case dealer and aftermarket diesel-engine specialists.

Power shift transmission with torque converter

The original 1150 uses a power shift transmission with torque converter — clutchless gear changes under load, multiple forward and reverse speeds, torque converter providing smooth power transfer. Power shift is the standard configuration on 1150-class machines through the H-generation in the 1990s (hydrostatic drivetrain arrived later in the 1150 line than in the smaller 750 / 850 families).

Routine service items include shift solenoids and pressure switches, clutch packs, the torque converter itself, transmission oil cooler, and the transmission filter.

Undercarriage

The original 1150 undercarriage shares component heritage with the 850 family below and 1450 family above. Sprocket bolt patterns, idler geometries, and master pin dimensions cross-fit on multiple components — confirm by part number against your serial. Roller and idler bushings are routine wear items at production-run age, and most field-service 1150s have seen multiple full undercarriage rebuilds.

Blade system and hydraulics

The 1150 ships with a 6-way bulldozer blade — angle and tilt control hydraulically actuated. Larger blade than the 850-class machines below. Blade cylinders, blade-carrier slider blocks, and cutting edges are routine service items. Cutting edge replacement is needed every few hundred to few thousand hours of dozing depending on material and operator habit.

Hydraulic implement-circuit pressure is moderate by modern standards — open-center hydraulic systems were standard in this era. Seal kit availability for the blade cylinders is generally good, with aftermarket kits supporting most 1150-era cylinder dimensions.

Common service items on a 50-plus-year-old 1150

Engine accessory aging

Water pump, alternator, starter, and injection pump on the A451B are routinely rebuilt or replaced over the engine's service life. Cooling system service (radiator core flush or replacement, fan belt, hose set) is a routine maintenance milestone on 50-plus-year-old machines.

Power shift / torque converter service

Shift solenoid failure, clutch pack wear, torque converter degradation, transmission oil cooler service. The transmission filter and fluid should be on a scheduled service interval.

Hydraulic seal failure

Blade cylinder seal failures are common at this age. Cylinder rod chrome corrosion and seal weep are typical symptoms.

Undercarriage replacement cycles

Track chains, rollers, idlers, and sprockets all have measurable wear lives. Modern aftermarket undercarriage is available for the 1150 family.

Operator station and ROPS

Cab and canopy hardware, seat cushion replacement, and floorboard wear are typical aging-machine issues. ROPS structural integrity should be verified before resale.

Wiring and electrical

50-year-old wiring harnesses are routinely brittle. Hard starts, intermittent gauges, and dim lights are often traced to harness corrosion or insulation failure rather than the underlying component.

Why the original 1150 is still in service

The original 1150 is a large-frame Case crawler dozer in the size class above the 850 — substantial pushing power and stability for major dirt work, road maintenance, and large-acreage land-clearing. The Case A451B six-cylinder diesel is well-documented and well-supported. The power shift drivetrain is simpler to troubleshoot in the field than the hydrostatic systems on the later 1150K / L / M generations. For owner-operators and rural mechanics who value field-serviceability, the 1150 remains a productive machine.
