John Deere 455D Crawler Loader: Hydrostatic Dual-Path Track Loader

The 455D Crawler Loader paired the JD 450-family chassis and undercarriage with a hydrostatic dual-path drive system and a front-mounted hydraulic bucket. Operators got the maneuverability of independent track control combined with the dig-and-load productivity of a purpose-built track loader.

John Deere 455D Crawler Loader

Where the 455D fits in the JD crawler loader family

JD built crawler loaders alongside its crawler dozers from the start of the 350 / 450 era. Early track loaders (350 Loader, 350B Loader, 450 Loader, 450B Loader) shared the dozer chassis and the dozer’s mechanical drivetrain with clutch-and-brake steering - the same machine with a front hydraulic bucket instead of a dozer blade. With the D generation JD moved the crawler loader line to a hydrostatic dual-path drive system, and renumbered the mid-class loader from 450-series to 455-series to mark the change.

The 455D’s dual-path hydrostatic drive replaces the mechanical transmission and steering clutches with two independent hydrostatic pump-and-motor circuits - one per track. The operator controls track speed and direction with two T-bar levers (or a joystick on some configurations). Each track can be driven forward or reverse independently and at any speed within the system’s range, giving counter-rotation capability and very precise low-speed maneuvering.

Why hydrostatic dual-path mattered on a track loader

On a mechanical crawler loader with clutch-and-brake steering, every steering input requires the operator to disengage one steering clutch and feather a brake. That’s manageable on a dozer working in straight passes, but a loader spends its day cycling - pile, truck, pile, truck - with constant maneuvering. Hydrostatic dual-path eliminates the clutch-and-brake routine entirely.

The benefits in a loader application are real:

  • Counter-rotation. The operator can spin the machine in place by driving one track forward and the other in reverse. Useful for working in tight quarters around piles, trucks, and forklift traffic.
  • Infinitely variable speed. No mechanical gear changes - speed and direction are smoothly adjustable across the entire operating range.
  • Reduced operator fatigue. Far fewer control inputs per work cycle compared to a clutch-and-brake loader.
  • No clutch wear. Wet or dry steering clutches don’t exist on a hydrostatic machine. The wear items become the hydrostatic pumps and motors instead.

The trade-off is a more complex hydraulic system to service. A hydrostatic dual-path failure typically means a pump or motor replacement, not a clutch adjustment. But properly maintained (clean hydraulic oil, filter changes on interval, no overheating), hydrostatic crawler loaders run reliably for many thousands of hours.

Engine, hydraulics, and undercarriage

The 455D ran a JD 4-cylinder diesel engine powering the dual-path drive system, the implement hydraulic circuit (bucket lift and tilt), and the steering hydraulics. The undercarriage carried the JD-pattern sealed-and-lubricated track chain, planetary final drives, and JD-pattern rollers and idlers - proven hardware from the 450 family carried over directly.

The implement hydraulic circuit drives bucket lift, bucket tilt, and on some configurations a multi-purpose 4-in-1 bucket with clamshell operation. Cylinder bore and stroke vary with bucket configuration.

Common service items on the 455D

The 455D is a hydraulic-heavy machine. The service priorities shift compared to a mechanical-drivetrain crawler:

  • Hydrostatic pumps and motors: Drive pump rebuilds, charge pump components, drive motor rebuilds, case drain hoses, hydrostatic filter housings.
  • Hydraulic filtration: Suction strainers, return filters, charge filter, hydraulic oil. Clean oil is everything on a hydrostatic machine.
  • Undercarriage: Track chains, track shoes, rollers, idlers, sprockets, idler springs.
  • Engine internals: JD 4-cylinder diesel rebuild kits - pistons, rings, sleeves, bearings, gaskets.
  • Fuel system: Injection pump rebuilds, injectors, lift pump, fuel filters.
  • Cooling system: Radiator, water pump, hydraulic oil cooler, thermostat, hoses. Cooling matters more on a hydrostatic machine because rejected heat is higher.
  • Implement hydraulics: Bucket cylinders, seal kits, control valves, hoses.
  • Final drives: Sprockets, planetary gears, seals, bearings.
  • Electrical: Starter, alternator, harnesses, switches, control modules.

What to verify before ordering

  • Serial number. The 455D had running changes during its production run. Match parts to the machine serial number.
  • Hydrostatic pump/motor variant. Drive pump and motor part numbers changed during the production run. Confirm against the existing pump/motor casting numbers.
  • Engine serial. JD 4-cylinder diesel internal parts must match the engine serial number, not just the machine serial.
  • Bucket configuration. Standard bucket, 4-in-1 multi-purpose, and forestry buckets shipped on different configurations. Cylinder bore and stroke vary.
  • Undercarriage configuration. Standard, narrow, and LGP-style configurations existed. Confirm shoe width and roller count.
  • Cab vs. ROPS canopy. Operator station equipment varied - confirm cab glass, weather seals, and door parts to the right configuration.

Why the 455D is a working machine today

The 455D appeals to customers who want a track loader with the maneuverability of independent track control without the cost of a modern hydrostatic machine. It runs a relatively simple JD 4-cylinder diesel (no electronics, no emissions aftertreatment) paired with a hydrostatic drive system that’s well-understood by anyone who has serviced JD crawler loaders. Parts availability remains strong because the JD 450 / 455 family is among the most-produced crawler platforms in industry history.

For customers running a 455D, the maintenance priorities are clear: keep hydraulic oil clean and cool, change filters on schedule, replace undercarriage as it wears, and rebuild the engine on a sensible interval. Hydrostatic pumps and motors have very long service lives when fed clean cool oil. Broken Tractor maintains parts coverage for the 455D and the broader JD crawler loader family.
