Case 660 Trencher: High-Performance Ride-On Trencher

The Case 660 is a high-performance ride-on trencher built for serious underground utility work. A step above the 560 in digging depth, chain pull, and chassis durability, it was designed for tough soil conditions and extended trenching operations on telecom, gas, water, and power line projects.

Where the 660 fits in the Case trencher line

The Case 660 sits above the 560 and below the 760 in the Case ride-on trencher line. It is the high-performance class with increased digging depth, chain pull, and chassis durability, built for hard soil and extended trenching cycles. Contractors reach for the 660 when 560-class output isn’t enough but full 760-class chassis weight isn’t required.

Locating your serial number On the Case 660 the serial number is stamped on the frame near the operator platform. Confirm the serial before ordering - the 660’s production run saw multiple revisions to digger boom, chain, and hydraulic components for extreme-duty applications.

Engine, hydraulics, and drivetrain

The Case 660 runs a CNH industrial diesel through a heavy-duty hydrostatic propel system. Digger boom and chain pull are scaled up from the 560, with rock and frost tooth configurations available for hard-soil applications. The hydraulic chain drive motor is sized for extended trenching cycles in difficult ground conditions, and the chassis is built to absorb the shock loads that come with trenching in rock, frost, and compacted ground.

The hydrostatic propel system uses a heavy-duty pump and wheel motors to deliver fine speed control during digging, while the digger circuit runs on a dedicated high-pressure line. Hydraulic chain tensioning keeps the digging chain loaded correctly through varying soil conditions.

Common service items on the 660

  • Engine internals: Diesel engine pistons, rings, sleeves, bearings, head gaskets. Most Case trenchers use Case or CNH industrial diesel engines through the production run. The J901774 flywheel ring gear cross-fits the Case backhoe / trencher / skid steer / forklift / dozer family.
  • Fuel system: Injection pump, injectors, lift pump, primary and secondary fuel filters. The D139225 in-line fuel filter cross-fits broadly across Case backhoes, dozers, skid steers, loaders, excavators, and trenchers.
  • Air intake: A173290 air filter cross-fits broadly across Case backhoe / dozer / forklift / loader / skid steer / trencher applications.
  • Exhaust: A173180 muffler cross-fits Case backhoe / forklift / trencher applications.
  • Cooling system: Radiator, water pump, thermostat, fan, hoses, belts.
  • Digger chain: Digger chain, teeth (rock, dirt, frost, carbide), chain side links, digger boom bearings, chain tensioner.
  • Digger hydraulics: Digger boom drive motor, chain drive sprocket, hydraulic chain tensioning cylinder, control valves, high-pressure hoses. The 1543252C1 hydraulic cylinder seal kit cross-fits across Case dozers, loaders, backhoes, and trenchers.
  • Hydraulic filtration: A177615 hydraulic spin-on filter cross-fits Case telehandler and trencher hydraulic systems.
  • Drivetrain: Hydrostatic propel pump and motors, axles, planetary final drives. K260218 front axle stud is a Case backhoe / forklift / trencher cross-fit hardware item.
  • Brakes: Service and park brakes. A168790 parking brake disc cross-fits Case forklifts, loader-backhoes, and trenchers.
  • Electrical: Starter, alternator, wiring harness, gauges, switches, key switch.
  • Operator station: Seat, controls, joystick / lever linkage, ROPS canopy, gauges.
Digger chain wear in hard ground On the 660 working rock, frost, or compacted ground, digger chain teeth wear faster than mounts. Rotate and replace teeth before tooth mounts wear out - replacing mounts is a much bigger job than replacing teeth. Carbide-tipped teeth are available for extreme conditions and last significantly longer than standard rock teeth.

What to verify before ordering

  • Serial number. Confirm the serial on the Case 660 before ordering year-specific parts.
  • Engine serial. Engine internal parts must match the engine serial number.
  • Digger chain configuration. Chain pitch, link count, and tooth type (rock / dirt / frost / carbide) vary by configuration - confirm before ordering.
  • Hydrostatic pump generation. Pump and motor revisions occurred during the production run - confirm by serial.
  • Cab vs. ROPS canopy. Operator station equipment varied between configurations.
  • Boom length. 660s were offered with different digger boom lengths affecting chain and hose part numbers.

Why the 660 still earns a paycheck

The Case 660 is the trencher contractors reach for when the 560 isn’t enough - deep utility installations in hard soil, extended-cycle trenching in rock or frost conditions, large-scale telecom or gas line work. The heavier chassis and higher-output digger system extends the productive working envelope without stepping all the way up to the 760-class.

Maintenance priorities on a 660: digger chain and tooth condition (rock / frost teeth wear faster in hard ground - rotate and replace before mounts wear), hydrostatic system condition, brake service, and engine service per schedule. Broken Tractor maintains parts coverage across the Case trencher family.
