Case 580D Construction King Backhoe Loader: Specs, Parts & Common Issues
Produced 1980 – 1987, the naturally aspirated 580D is the D-generation Construction King's mainstream version — Case G207D 4-cylinder diesel, 207 ci / 3.4 L, approximately 50 HP. Bonded-disc brakes, power shuttle drivetrain, and a parts ecosystem that crosses heavily into the 580 Super E.
The Case 580D is the naturally aspirated variant of the D-generation Construction King backhoe loader, produced 1980 – 1987. It uses the Case G207D — a 207 cubic inch (3.4 L) four-cylinder direct-injection diesel rated at approximately 50 HP — paired with Case's Power Shuttle transmission, single-stage torque converter, and the bonded-disc brake system that replaced the earlier band-brake architecture of the 580C. The 580D sat alongside the turbocharged 580 Super D in showrooms throughout the run, with most fleet and private buyers choosing the naturally aspirated 580D unless they specifically needed the Super D's extra power.
For owners maintaining a 580D today, the most useful single fact is that many of the most common service parts cross-fit with the 580 Super E that came after it. Hydraulic pumps, cylinder seal kits, swing tower pin kits, stabilizer leg pin kits — the 580D and 580 Super E share their physical structure even though the engines differ. That cross-fit reality is reflected in our verified BigCommerce parts catalog, where the D126580 hydraulic pump (a routine high-volume 580D service item) is labeled "Case 580D & 580E."

How the 580D differs from the 580 Super D
The 580D and 580 Super D are mechanically identical machines except for the engine and supporting cooling and exhaust systems. Both ran from 1980 through 1987 on the same chassis, with the same Power Shuttle transmission, the same axles, the same hydraulics, and the same loader and backhoe iron. The differences:
- Engine — the 580D uses the naturally aspirated G207D; the 580 Super D uses the turbocharged G207TD. The blocks are closely related but the Super D adds a wastegated turbocharger and stronger internal components to handle the boost.
- Power output — 580D approximately 50 HP; 580 Super D approximately 60 HP gross.
- Connecting rods and pistons — the Super D uses heavier-duty internals. Our A51913 connecting rod is explicitly labeled "207 Non-Turbo" for the 580D; the Super D requires a different turbo-spec rod.
- Cooling capacity — slightly larger cooling system on the Super D to handle the turbo's heat load.
- Exhaust system — turbocharger plumbing on the Super D; conventional manifold and muffler on the 580D.
- Filter kits — our CS-580D-FKIT is labeled "Non-Turbo" specifically because the Super D uses a different filter set.
The practical buying decision in 1985 came down to fuel economy and serviceability (favoring the 580D) vs. raw power (favoring the Super D). Today, with the turbo population aging, the naturally aspirated 580D is generally easier and less expensive to keep running.
The Case G207D engine
The Case G207D is a 207 cubic inch (3.4 L) four-cylinder direct-injection diesel that was used across several Case industrial machines of the era — the 580C, 580D, 586C forklift, and 480D backhoe all share the same engine family. That broad application gives the 580D an unusually wide parts-availability network for engine internals: pistons, rings, bearings, connecting rods, head gasket sets, water pumps, and oil pumps cross through the 207-series Case service catalog rather than being trapped in 580D-only parts inventories.
The G207D is the larger sibling of the G188D used on the earlier 580B / 580CK and the 480CK / 480B. The displacement step from 188 to 207 cubic inches arrived with the 580C and continued through the 580D. The 580D's G207D shares its lower end with the turbocharged G207TD used on the 580 Super D — the connecting rods, pistons, and head differ between turbo and non-turbo, but the block itself is the same casting.
Power shuttle drivetrain
The Case Power Shuttle transmission is a hydraulically actuated forward/reverse system with a single-stage torque converter and a 4-speed gearbox. The operator selects direction with a column-mounted shuttle lever — no foot clutch needed for direction changes, which makes backhoe cycling substantially faster than a manual transmission would allow.
Service items on the Power Shuttle are predictable: hydraulically actuated clutch packs wear, the shuttle control valve gets sticky, and the torque converter charge pump weakens with age. The CS-580C-TRAXL-R rebuilt transaxle in our catalog covers the 580C and 580D as a complete drop-in replacement when the original transaxle is past piecemeal rebuild. The A150159R-Kit transaxle rebuild kit covers 480C, 480D, 580C, and 580D for owners doing in-place rebuilds.

Common issues and what to expect
Hydraulic cylinder seal failure
Every cylinder on a 40-plus-year-old 580D has seals that are well past expected service life. Symptoms: visible weeping at the rod end, cylinder drift under load, slow cycle response. The CS-SK-1C complete-machine seal kit is the standard fix — covers every cylinder in one package and is a routine high-volume service item for the family.
Hydraulic pump degradation
The original main hydraulic pump (replaced new by D126580 in our catalog) wears over time. Symptoms: lazy boom and dipper, weak stabilizers, longer cycle times under load, audible cavitation under high demand. Replace the suction strainer at the same time as the pump.
Power shuttle clutch wear and torque converter degradation
Hydraulically actuated clutch packs in the Power Shuttle wear with age. Symptoms: harsh forward-to-reverse changes, slow direction engagement, slipping under load. The A150159R-Kit rebuild kit covers the rebuild components; the CS-580C-TRAXL-R rebuilt transaxle is the drop-in alternative.
Swing tower pin and bushing wear
The swing tower takes the full load of every dig cycle. Pins and bushings at the bottom-to-frame, swing cylinder rod-to-tower, and boom-to-tower connections all wear over time. Symptoms: slop in the boom under load, audible knock during swing reversals, visible side-play in the boom assembly. Our D120495-Kit, D94019-Kit, and D91240K pin kits cover the three primary swing tower wear points.
Stabilizer wear
Stabilizer leg pins (D89838K-1) and stabilizer cylinder ends wear from setting down hard or from constant cycling on hard surfaces. Replace at the first sign of slop.
Bonded-disc brake wear
The 580D's bonded-disc brakes are the major improvement over the band brakes on the earlier 580B. Wear shows up as reduced pedal pressure, brake drag when not engaged, or uneven braking left vs. right. The CS-BH-BK-2 complete brake replacement package is the standard fix.
Cab and weather seal aging
The F44629 upper rear cab glass and matching glass items are common replacement parts on cab-equipped 580D machines. Forty-plus-year-old rubber seals dry out and crack.

Request a PartWhere the 580D sits in the Construction King family
The 580D is the mainstream D-generation Construction King small-frame backhoe loader. Above it in the D generation sat the 580 Super D — same chassis, turbocharged engine, higher output. Below it was the 480D, the smaller-frame sibling. Before the 580D came the 580C with the same G207D engine but band brakes; after the 580D came the 580E with a new Cummins 4-390 engine and refined hydraulics. The 580 Super E that succeeded the Super D shares so much architecture with the 580D that many service parts cross-fit between them — useful when sourcing replacements today.
