Case 580 Super L Backhoe Loader: Specs, Parts & Common Issues

Produced 1995 – 2000 as the turbocharged version of the L-generation Construction King. Cummins 4T-390 turbocharged four-cylinder diesel, approximately 86–91 HP gross, the redesigned L-generation cab, and the critical Series I vs. Series II drivetrain split at serial JJG0258465 — the latter introducing the optional Powershift transmission. Same chassis as the 580L; engine, exhaust, hydraulic tank, and filter kits are where they diverge.

Case 580 Super L Construction King Turbocharged Backhoe Loader

The Case 580 Super L is the turbocharged version of the L-generation Construction King small-frame backhoe loader. It came to market in 1995 alongside the naturally aspirated 580L and ran through 2000. The Super L carries the Cummins 4T-390 turbocharged four-cylinder diesel forward from the 580 Super K — output rated at approximately 86 HP net / 91 HP gross — paired with the redesigned L-generation cab and the same 17-spline hydraulic pump architecture used on the 580L.

The defining factual distinction within the 580 Super L production run is the Series I vs. Series II split at serial JJG0258465. Series II introduced an optional Powershift transmission, a different hydraulic tank configuration, and revised filter kits. Several major service parts have different part numbers between Series I and Series II — the filter maintenance kit, hydraulic tank, and Powershift controller being the most consequential.

Critical: Series I vs Series II split at JJG0258465 The 580 Super L production was divided into Series I (before JJG0258465) and Series II (after). The most important Series I vs Series II differences: filter kits (CS-580LI-FK Series I vs. CS-580LIIT-FK Series II), hydraulic tank (130050A1 is Series I only), turbo muffler (192483A1 is Series I ONLY — will NOT fit Series II), and the optional Powershift transmission with its dedicated controller (336551A1 Powershift controller is Series II only). Always confirm serial number before ordering — Series I parts will not fit Series II machines for these systems.

How the Super L differs from the 580L

The Super L and 580L share their chassis, transmission base architecture, axles, brakes, hydraulics, cab, and most loader and backhoe iron. The differences are confined to the engine and supporting systems:

  • Engine — Super L uses the Cummins 4T-390 turbocharged 4-cylinder; 580L uses the naturally aspirated 4-390. Same 239 cubic inch (3.9 L) block, same Bosch in-line injection pump architecture, but with different connecting rods, pistons, and head specifications to handle the turbo's pressure and heat.
  • Turbocharger — only on the Super L. Wastegated turbo, oil supply and return lines, and exhaust plumbing are all Super L-specific.
  • Muffler — Super L Series I uses 192483A1 (turbo muffler labeled "Series I ONLY"); Super L Series II uses a different exhaust configuration; 580L uses the 192928A1 non-turbo muffler. Three machines, three different mufflers.
  • Filter kits — Super L Series I uses CS-580LI-FK; Super L Series II uses CS-580LIIT-FK. The 580L uses a non-turbo filter configuration.
  • Power output — Super L approximately 11–16 HP higher with substantially more low-end torque under load.
  • Hydraulic tank — Super L Series I uses 130050A1 (Series I hydraulic tank); Series II uses a different tank configuration.
  • Cooling system — slightly larger or higher-flow on the Super L to handle the turbo's heat load. The 185377A1 Super L fan is Super L-specific.

How the Super L differs from the Super K

The Super L is the L-generation continuation of the Super K turbocharged line. The defining changes:

  • Cab and operator station — completely redesigned L-generation cab vs. the Super K's pre-L cab. Better visibility, refined controls, improved HVAC.
  • 17-spline hydraulic pump shaft — the Super L (like the 580L) uses a 17-spline pump shaft. The Super K uses a different spline configuration. Pumps do NOT interchange between K and L generations.
  • Refined hydraulic plumbing — updated hose routing and control valve refinements.
  • Series II Powershift option — Super L Series II introduced an optional Powershift transmission with electronic controller. The Super K was power-shuttle only.
  • Same engine — Cummins 4T-390 continues unchanged from Super K. Engine internals interchange.
  • Same wet-disc brake architecture — continues from Super K.

The Cummins 4T-390 turbocharged engine

The Super L's Cummins 4T-390 is the same turbocharged 4BT used on the Super K, with calibration refinements for emissions and durability targets. The wastegated turbocharger is the most common engine-service item that distinguishes the Super L from the naturally aspirated 580L. Symptoms of turbo wear: blue smoke at startup or under throttle, oil consumption, audible whine outside the normal pitch range, or visible shaft play. Plan on a turbocharger rebuild or replacement as a baseline restoration step on any unrestored Super L.

The broader Cummins 4BT parts ecosystem applies to the Super L: pistons, rings, bearings, head gasket sets, water pumps, oil pumps, and many valve train components source through both Case-branded and Cummins B-series industrial channels. This is one of the more parts-supportable older Case backhoe engines.

Series II Powershift transmission

The Super L Series II introduced an optional Powershift transmission — a meaningful upgrade from the standard Power Shuttle. The Powershift uses an electronic controller (336551A1 in our catalog, explicitly labeled "580 Super L Series II, 590 Super L Series II") to manage clutch-free shifting under load, with direction changes accomplished electronically rather than through the column-mounted shuttle lever.

If your Super L is Series II and has the Powershift option, the 336551A1 controller is the standard fix when the transmission goes into limp mode or refuses to shift cleanly. The Power Shuttle remained the standard transmission on both Series I and Series II machines; the Powershift was an additional-cost option on Series II.

Common issues and what to expect

Turbocharger wear (Super L-specific)

The 4T-390 wastegated turbocharger is the most common service item that distinguishes the Super L from the naturally aspirated 580L. The K3592015R reman turbo is the verified replacement. Replace at the first sign of bearing wear — a failed turbo can ingest its own compressor wheel.

Series I vs Series II parts ordering

The most common parts-ordering mistake on a Super L is ordering the wrong-series part. Filter kits, hydraulic tanks, mufflers, and Powershift parts differ between Series I and Series II. Always confirm serial number against the JJG0258465 split.

4T-390 engine wear

Same engine family as the Super K. Common items on 25-plus-year-old turbo engines: head gasket failure, injector wear, lift pump diaphragm failure, water pump shaft bearing wear, and the turbocharger items called out above.

Hydraulic cylinder seal failure

Every cylinder on a 25-plus-year-old Super L has seals well past expected service life. The 175251A1 loader bucket tilt cylinder seal kit is the highest-volume seal kit; the broader Super L cylinders (boom, dipper, swing, stabilizer, bucket) all benefit from periodic reseal.

Cooling system service

The 232366A1 upper radiator hose is one of our top Super L sellers — 25-year-old hoses harden and crack. Replace the lower hose at the same time, and inspect the 185377A1 cooling fan and the hydraulic oil cooler (233817A1).

Powershift transmission service (Series II option)

If your Super L Series II has the optional Powershift, the 336551A1 controller is the standard service item when transmission shifting becomes erratic. The Powershift's internal mechanical components are durable; controller failures or wiring harness issues account for most service complaints.

4WD front axle wear

Carraro 4WD front axles see heavy steering loads under loader work. The D138954R rebuilt 2WD front axle is the cost-effective fix for 2WD machines past piecemeal repair; 4WD axles have their own service items and rebuild paths.

Wet-disc brake wear

Continued from the K-generation. After 6,000–8,000 hours of service, wet-disc brakes wear out — the L-generation brake architecture is similar to the K-generation.

Where the 580 Super L sits in the Construction King family

The 580 Super L is the L-generation turbocharged Construction King small-frame backhoe loader. It sat alongside the naturally aspirated 580L from 1995 through 2000. Before the Super L came the 580 Super K with the same 4T-390 engine on a pre-L cab. After the Super L came the 580 Super M (2001–2008), which replaced the Cummins 4T-390 with the Case 445T/M engine and continued the L-generation cab and hydraulics forward. The 590 Super L sat above the Super L on a larger chassis with the same 4T-390 engine.
