Case 550G Crawler Dozer: Specs, Parts & Common Issues
Produced 1996 – 2001, the Case 550G is the G-generation mid-class crawler dozer offered with two factory engine options — the naturally aspirated Cummins 4B-390 OR the turbocharged 4T-390. Power shuttle drivetrain, refined operator station, and a clean continuation of the 550E chassis with the engine choice being the defining ordering decision. The 550G was Case’s last G-generation dozer before the H-generation arrived in 2001.
The Case 550G Crawler Dozer is the G-generation successor to the 550E in Case’s mid-class dozer line. It came to market in 1996, replacing the 550E directly, and ran through 2001 before the 550H arrived. The 550G’s defining order-spec feature is the engine choice: naturally aspirated Cummins 4B-390 for owners who prioritized fuel economy and simplicity, or turbocharged Cummins 4T-390 for owners who needed extra power under heavy loads. Both engines share the same 239 cubic inch (3.9 L) four-cylinder block, paired with the same power shuttle transmission, and shared all chassis and undercarriage components.
For owners maintaining a 550G today, the most important parts-ordering distinction is whether your machine has the turbo or non-turbo engine. The CS-550G-NT-FK filter kit is for non-turbo machines and the CS-550G-FK filter kit is for turbo machines — confirm engine configuration before ordering.

How the 550G differs from the 550E
The 550G is an engine and refinement update over the 550E rather than a clean-sheet redesign. The notable changes:
- Turbo option introduced — the 550E was naturally aspirated only. The 550G added the optional 4T-390 turbocharged engine for owners needing more power, expanding the model’s capability range.
- Refined cab and controls — updated operator station compared to the 550E.
- Most chassis parts cross-fit — sprocket, track adjuster, blade hydraulics, and many other components share between 550E and 550G. The R57298 sprocket, D44881 angle cylinder pin, and R58450 chrome adjuster rod all cross-fit the entire 550E / 550G / 550H family.
- Same Cummins 4-390 engine family — the engine block is shared between 550E (NA only) and 550G (NA or turbo). Engine internals interchange between NA configurations.
The Cummins 4B-390 and 4T-390 engines
Both 550G engine options are part of the Cummins B-series industrial engine family — 239 cubic inch (3.9 L) four-cylinder direct-injection diesels with the same 4.02 × 4.72 inch bore and stroke geometry. The 4B-390 is naturally aspirated; the 4T-390 adds a wastegated turbocharger and uses heavier-duty pistons and connecting rods to handle the increased boost pressure.
Both engines benefit from the broad Cummins B-series parts ecosystem. Pistons, rings, bearings, head gasket sets, water pumps, and oil pumps source readily through Case-branded and Cummins B-series industrial channels. The two engine configurations DO differ in filter requirements, fuel system components, exhaust hardware, and some cooling-system items — confirm engine before ordering anything engine-specific.
Power shuttle drivetrain
Same Case 4-speed power shuttle as the 550E — hydraulically actuated forward/reverse with torque converter. The shuttle’s clutch packs are the main wear item; the torque converter charge pump and shuttle valve also wear over time. For owners doing power-shuttle service work, the verified replacement components are the same as on the 550E.
Undercarriage
The 550G undercarriage shares the long-track sprocket (R57298) with the 550E, 550H, and post-JAK0013968 550 machines. Track adjustment uses the R58450 chrome adjuster rod and R58480 adjuster assembly. The R57366 track master pin is a consumable on every track split.
For undercarriage wear protection, the PV641 track rock guard set covers 6-roller 550G machines (and cross-fits 550E). The 187916A2 left-hand recoil spring assembly covers 450 through 550G — wide cross-fit.
Hydraulic system
Blade and ripper hydraulics carry forward from the 550E. The CS-550E-SK blade hydraulic cylinder rebuild kit package covers 6-way blade configurations on both 550E and 550G. Individual cylinder service items: 1542717C1 blade tilt cylinder, 1542764C1 lift cylinder seal kit.
The R43429 hydraulic pump covers 550G dozers (and cross-fits certain Case skid steer loaders).
Cooling and exhaust
The A172867 radiator cross-fits the entire 450C / 550 / 550E / 550G / 550H family. The A173459 radiator fan shroud is shared with 580K backhoes and 450C dozers.
For non-turbo 550G machines, the A172489 muffler with spark arrester is the verified non-turbo exhaust component. Turbo 550G machines use a different turbo-spec exhaust configuration.

Common issues and what to expect
Wrong filter kit for engine configuration
The single most common parts-ordering mistake on a 550G is ordering the wrong filter kit. Confirm turbo vs. non-turbo before ordering — the CS-550G-NT-FK non-turbo kit will NOT work on turbo machines, and vice versa.
Cummins 4B-390 / 4T-390 engine wear
Both engine configurations share the Cummins 4BT block architecture. Common items on 25-plus-year-old engines: head gasket failure, injector wear, water pump shaft bearing wear, lift pump diaphragm aging. Turbo engines add turbocharger bearing wear, oil supply line failure, and wastegate fault as additional service points.
Power shuttle wear
Same wear pattern as the 550E. Hydraulically actuated clutch packs wear with age; check shuttle hydraulic pressure first when diagnosing harsh shifts.
Track adjuster and undercarriage wear
The chrome-rod track adjuster has a known wear pattern. The R58450 chrome rod and R58480 complete assembly are the standard rebuilds.
Blade cylinder seal failure
Blade angle, tilt, and lift cylinders develop seal weeps over time. The CS-550E-SK kit package bundles the major seal kits.
Cooling system service
25-plus-year-old radiator cores corrode internally. The A172867 radiator is the verified replacement.
Cutting edge wear
The CS-550E-CEK cutting edge kit covers the 96-inch blade configuration.

Request a PartWhere the 550G sits in the Case dozer family
The 550G is the G-generation mid-class Case crawler dozer. Above it sits the 650G; below it sits the Case 450C. Before the 550G came the 550E (naturally aspirated only). After the 550G came the 550H (2001–2010), which standardized on the Cummins 4T-390 turbo. The 550G represents the bridge between the simpler 550E and the modern 550H — and is unique in offering owners the engine choice.
