Case 550E Crawler Dozer: Specs, Parts & Common Issues
Produced 1988 – 1996, the Case 550E is the E-generation mid-class crawler dozer that bridged the original 550’s G188D engine to the modern Cummins-derived 4-390 powerplant. Approximately 75 horsepower, power shuttle drivetrain, and a substantially refined operator station compared to the launch 550. The 550E ran for eight years before the 550G took over the mid-class slot with turbo and non-turbo engine options.
The Case 550E Crawler Dozer is the E-generation successor to the original Case 550 in Case’s mid-class dozer line. It came to market in 1988 — replacing the 550 directly — and ran through 1996 before the 550G took over. The defining 550E change is the engine: Case retired the long-serving G188D (188 ci / 3.1 L) used on the 550 and replaced it with the Case 4-390, a Cummins-derived 239 ci (3.9 L) four-cylinder direct-injection diesel rated at approximately 75 horsepower. The 4-390 family powers Case’s broader L-generation backhoe loaders, the 450C and 455C dozers, and the 580K backhoe — broad cross-application that keeps engine internals well-supported in the aftermarket.
For owners maintaining a 550E today, the most useful single fact is that most non-engine service parts cross-fit with the 550G successor. The R57298 long-track sprocket covers 550E, 550G, and 550H (plus post-JAK0013968 550). The D44881 angle cylinder pin and R58450 chrome track adjuster rod are both shared with the 550G. Many blade-system service items also cross-fit the entire 450/550 family.

How the 550E differs from the 550
The 550E is a substantial platform refresh over the original 550. The key changes:
- Engine family change — 550 used the Case G188D (3.1 L, 58 HP); 550E uses the Case 4-390 / Cummins 4BT (3.9 L, ~75 HP). Larger displacement, ~17 HP more power, Cummins-derived block with broad aftermarket support.
- Power shuttle standard — the 550 offered mechanical or power shuttle; the 550E standardized on power shuttle.
- Refined undercarriage — sprocket and track adjuster components updated. The R57298 sprocket introduced on late-production 550 (post-JAK0013968) continues on the 550E.
- Updated operator station — improved cab and controls compared to the launch 550.
- Hydraulic system updates — refined cylinder seal package and updated hydraulic plumbing.
The Case 4-390 / Cummins 4BT engine
The Case 4-390 is the naturally aspirated 4-cylinder version of the Cummins 4BT 3.9 L industrial diesel — the same engine family that powers Case L-generation backhoes (580L, 580K), the 450C dozer, and a wide range of broader Cummins B-series industrial applications. That cross-application means engine internals — pistons, rings, bearings, head gasket sets, water pumps, oil pumps — source through both Case-branded and broader Cummins 4BT service channels.
For routine service, the CS-550E-FK filter service kit bundles engine oil, fuel, air, and hydraulic filters in one package. Common 4-390 service items on 30-plus-year-old engines: head gasket failure, injector wear, water pump shaft bearing wear, lift pump diaphragm aging.
Undercarriage and tracks
The 550E undercarriage shares its sprocket with the 550G and 550H (the R57298 long-track sprocket). Track adjustment is handled by the chrome-rod design with the R58450 adjuster rod and the matching R58480 adjuster assembly covering 550E, 550G, and 550H. The R57366 track master pin covers the entire 550 / 550E / 550G / 550H family — budget a fresh master pin every time the track is split.
For undercarriage wear protection, the PV641 track rock guard set covers both 550E and 550G machines on 6-roller configurations.
Blade system
Blade hydraulic service across the E and G generations crosses freely. The CS-550E-SK blade hydraulic cylinder rebuild kit package covers the 6-way blade configurations on 550E and 550G. Individual cylinder service items include the 1542717C1 blade tilt cylinder and the 1542764C1 lift cylinder seal kit.
The CS-550E-CEK cutting edge kit covers the 96-inch blade on 550E and 550G (and cross-fits 450, 450C, 550). For ripper-equipped 550E machines, the G101230 hydraulic ripper cylinder (cross-fits 450B through 550H) is the verified rear-ripper component.
Cooling and exhaust
The A172867 radiator covers an exceptionally broad cross-fit — 450C, 550, 550E, 550G, and 550H all use the same radiator part number. The A172489 muffler with spark arrester is the non-turbo exhaust component for the 550E (also fits 450C, 455C, 550, 550G). Required for any 550E operating in fire-restricted areas.
For 550E charging system service, the A187623 12V 95A alternator is the verified replacement (cross-fits 650G and 650H as well).

Common issues and what to expect
Case 4-390 / Cummins 4BT engine wear
The Cummins 4BT block is durable, with broad parts availability through both Case and Cummins B-series channels. Common items on 30-plus-year-old 4-390 engines: head gasket failure, injector wear, water pump shaft bearing wear, lift pump diaphragm aging. Use the CS-550E-FK filter service kit at scheduled intervals to keep filtration current.
Power shuttle wear
Hydraulically actuated clutch packs wear with age. Symptoms: harsh forward-to-reverse changes, slow direction engagement, slipping under load. Check shuttle hydraulic pressure first; clutch pack rebuild may be required.
Track adjuster and undercarriage wear
The chrome-rod track adjuster system on the 550E has a known wear pattern. The R58450 adjuster rod and R58480 assembly are the standard rebuilds. Track shoe wear, idler wear, and sprocket chord wear all develop over decades.
Blade cylinder seal failure
Blade angle, tilt, and lift cylinders all develop seal weeps over time. The CS-550E-SK blade cylinder rebuild kit package bundles the major cylinder seal kits.
Cooling system corrosion
30-plus-year-old radiator cores corrode internally. The A172867 radiator is the verified replacement (cross-fits multiple machines, easy to source).
Charging system aging
The A187623 95A alternator is the verified replacement when charging output drops.
Final drive wear
Final drive bearings wear over decades of service. The 1348973C1 bevel gear and pinion set covers the major final drive gear replacement.

The 550E is the E-generation mid-class Case crawler dozer. Above it sits the 650 family; below it sits the Case 450C small-class dozer. After the 550E came the 550G (1996–2001) with both naturally aspirated and turbocharged engine options, then the 550H (2001–2010) which moved to the Cummins 4T-390 turbo standard.
