Case 530CK Construction King: Specs, Parts & Common Issues

Produced 1960 through 1967 — the first widely produced Case Construction King backhoe, built on the 530 utility tractor platform. Case G188D 188-cubic-inch diesel or G159 159-cubic-inch gas, mechanical shuttle with single dry clutch, and external band brakes.

Case 530CK Construction King Backhoe Loader

The Case 530CK is the first widely produced Case Construction King backhoe. Built from 1960 through 1967 on the Case 530 utility-tractor platform, it established the Construction King product line that ran for the next thirty-plus years through the 480 and 580 families. The 530CK was offered with either the Case G188D 188-cubic-inch diesel or the Case G159 159-cubic-inch gas engine, paired with a 4-speed mechanical shuttle and a single dry clutch. Brakes are external contracting band brakes on each rear axle — pre-dating the bonded-disc-in-drum design that arrived with later Construction King generations.

This guide covers the verified specifications, where to find the serial number, the engine and drivetrain options, the band brake system, the failure modes 530CK owners report most often, the parts we stock with confirmed 530CK fitment, and how the 530CK fits at the head of the Case Construction King lineage.

Where to find the serial number plate

The 530CK carries its tractor serial on a stamped data plate on the left side of the tractor frame rail, near the loader-arm pivot tower and the clutch housing. The engine serial is stamped separately on the left side of the engine block below the cylinder head. After 60-plus years of service life, plates are often weathered or obscured by grease — wire-brush the area and use a flashlight.

Production years and serial numbers

The Case 530CK was produced from 1960 through 1967, per verified industry references. Verified year-by-serial breaks for the 1962–1966 production range are widely cited and consistent across multiple sources; the 1960–1961 portion of the run does not have a single authoritative published year-break table in the open record.

Verify the build year against the engine and trans 60-plus years of service life means most 530CKs in the field have had their engine, transmission, or front axle replaced at least once. Match the tractor frame serial to the year-break table for the chassis, then read the engine block stamp separately for engine-specific parts.

Engine and powertrain

The 530CK was factory-available with two engines, both Case-built inline four-cylinders:

  • Case G188D diesel — 188 cubic inches (3.1 L), naturally aspirated, liquid-cooled, indirect injection. Bore 3.81 in × stroke 4.13 in. 17.5:1 compression. Approximately 52 HP gross at 2,100 rpm. Roosa Master / Stanadyne DB-series rotary injection pump. The G188D became the workhorse engine of the 430CK, 480CK, 480B, 580CK, 580B, and 580C — parts cross widely across all of them.
  • Case G159 gas — 159 cubic inches (2.6 L), four-cylinder. Approximately 47.6 HP gross at 1,900 rpm. Updraft carburetor.

Transmission is a 4-speed sliding-gear gearbox with a mechanical shuttle lever, driven through a single 11-inch dry clutch. There was no power shuttle option on the 530CK — that drivetrain arrived in the Construction King line with the 580CK in 1966. The 530CK is dry-clutch only.

External band brakes

The 530CK uses external contracting band brakes on each rear axle — the pre-bonded-disc Case design. Each pedal operates a band wrapped around a drum on its respective final drive housing. The architecture is shared across the 430CK, 480CK, 480B, 580CK, and 580B Construction King models, which is why our brake category groups all six together.

Common failure modes on this brake design: bands sticking to drums after the machine has sat, broken band return springs, rust-frozen ball-and-ramp actuators, and contaminated linings from axle-seal leaks. None of these are catastrophic — band sets and lining kits are stocked and the work is straightforward once you have the access panels off.

Common problems documented by owners

The following failure modes reflect common operator service experience for this model. Diagnose in order before replacing major components.

Single dry clutch wear and slip

The 530CK's hard direction-change duty cycle destroys clutches over time. Symptoms: gear grinding on the shuttle shift, slipping under load, the pedal hitting the floorboard without releasing. Replacement requires splitting the tractor. Before ordering a clutch kit, inspect the rear engine main seal and the front transmission seal — oil contamination on the dry clutch from either leak is a frequent root cause.

Roosa Master injection pump issues

The DB-series rotary pump on the G188D develops predictable failures with age: weeping mounting-flange seal, sticking delivery valves, internal plastic coupling disintegrating and clogging the return line, gum-up under the fuel return cap. Pump rebuilds with the R14711 seal kit address the seal-related failures; complete rebuilt pumps are stocked for more advanced wear.

Band brake sticking

After the machine sits for extended periods, the brake bands stick to the drums and the operator will report "no brakes" or "won't release." Fix is usually adjustment and a careful pedal cycle to free the friction surfaces. Worn bands and linings are still consumables.

Steering box leaks

Reseal at the steering shaft and steering box housing is a documented service item at high hours. Worn steering arms and tie rod ends contribute to looseness at the wheel.

Hydraulic pump access

The pump is buried under the loader tower on the 530CK — replacement requires loader-frame removal to gain access. Budget shop time accordingly.

Rodent nests in the bell housing

Recurring forum mention on long-stored 530CKs — mice and other rodents make nests in the bell housing, preventing the pressure plate from releasing properly. Pull the inspection cover before chasing a clutch problem on a machine that has been sitting.

The 530CK started Case's Construction King line — and the basic chassis, engine, brake, and drivetrain architecture you see on this machine continues all the way through the 580B. Parts cross widely.

Verified replacement parts

The 530CK shares heavy parts cross-fitment with the 430CK, 480CK, 480B, 580CK, and 580B. The parts below are confirmed to fit the 530CK either by explicit description or by inclusion in a Construction King 430/480/530/580 family category.

Frequently asked questions

What years was the Case 530CK made?

1960 through 1967. The 530CK was succeeded in its market role by the 580CK starting in 1966.

What engines were offered on the Case 530CK?

Two factory options: the Case G188D 188-cubic-inch diesel (approximately 52 HP gross at 2,100 rpm) and the Case G159 159-cubic-inch gas (approximately 47.6 HP gross at 1,900 rpm). Both are inline four-cylinder Case-built engines.

Does the 530CK have a power shuttle?

No. The 530CK is dry-clutch and mechanical-shuttle only — 4-speed sliding-gear gearbox with a manual shuttle lever. Power shuttle arrived in the Construction King line with the 580CK in 1966.

What kind of brakes does the 530CK have?

External contracting band brakes on each rear axle — the pre-bonded-disc Case design. The same architecture is shared across the 430CK, 480CK, 480B, 580CK, and 580B.

How deep does the 530CK backhoe dig?

Approximately 14 feet with the standard backhoe attachment, or about 15 feet 9 inches with the Extendahoe option.

Where is the serial number on a Case 530CK?

Stamped on a data plate on the left side of the tractor frame rail near the loader-arm pivot tower and the clutch housing. The engine carries a separate stamp on the left side of the block.

What parts cross between the 530CK and the 480CK?

A lot. Engine internals (the G188D is shared), clutch and mechanical shuttle transmission components, brake bands and linings, rear axle bull gears and ring-and-pinion sets, front axle 2WD components, and many cooling and electrical parts. The Construction King 430/480/530/580 family is one of the most parts-interchangeable lineups Case ever produced.
