Case 480E Construction King: Specs, Parts & Common Issues

Produced 1987 through 1992 — the model where Case moved the 480-line away from the Case-built G188D / G207D engines and onto the Cummins 4-390 (4B 3.9L). Mechanical shuttle and power shuttle drivetrains, 2WD and 4WD configurations, and the 480E LL Landscape Loader variant offered alongside the backhoe-loader.

Case 480E Construction King Backhoe Loader

The Case 480E ran from 1987 through 1992 and is the direct successor to the 480D in the Construction King 480-series lineup. The defining change between the 480D and 480E is the engine: Case moved the 480-line away from the Case-built G188D 188-cubic-inch diesel and onto the Cummins 4-390 (Cummins 4B 3.9L, 239 cubic inches). The 4-390 designation is Case's catalog name for the Cummins 4B-series — same engine family Case used across the dozer, skid steer, and trencher lines from the same era, which gives the 480E excellent parts availability today.

The 480E was also the first 480-series machine offered factory with a true 4WD front axle (Carraro), and it introduced the 480E LL (Landscape Loader) variant — a loader-only configuration without the backhoe, used in landscape, light utility, and skip-loader applications.

This guide covers the verified specifications, where to find the serial number, the engine and drivetrain options, the 4WD planetary front axle, the failure modes 480E owners report most often, the parts we stock with confirmed 480E fitment, and how the 480E fits in the Construction King lineage between the 480D predecessor and the 480F successor.

Where to find the serial number plate

The 480E carries its tractor serial on a stamped data plate riveted to the left side of the tractor frame rail, just behind or under the left loader tower near the clutch housing. By the 480E era, Case had transitioned to the JJG serial prefix (Burlington, Iowa plant code) — early 480Es carry numeric 17xxxxxx-style serials and later units carry the JJG-prefix.

Verify 2WD vs. 4WD before ordering front-end parts The 480E was offered factory in both 2WD and 4WD configurations. Spindles, hubs, tie-rod ends, king pins, planetary gears, and the front axle housing differ between the two. Confirm which axle your machine has before ordering anything front-end.

Production years

The Case 480E was built from 1987 through 1992. Dealer parts catalogs list a coverage window of January 1986 through December 1989 (which appears to reflect the dealer-catalog core VIN range), while industry references extend the window from 1985 through 1991 or 1992 to capture early development and tail-end deliveries. The 480F was introduced as the 480E's successor starting in 1992.

A single, publicly authoritative Case-published year-by-serial-start table for the 480E is not in the open record. Read the serial off the frame plate and confirm the build year against a Case dealer database before ordering anything tied to engine, drivetrain, or front-axle internals — the 480E spans Case's mid-production transition from numeric to JJG-prefix serials and from 2WD-only to 2WD/4WD configurations.

Engine and powertrain

The 480E is powered by the Case 4-390 — Case's catalog name for the Cummins 4B 3.9L four-cylinder naturally aspirated diesel. 239 cubic inches (3.9 L), bore 4.02 in × stroke 4.72 in, 17:1 compression, rated 69 HP gross / 63 HP net at 2,200 rpm. This is the same engine family Case used across the 1150E dozer, the 1840 / 1845C skid steers, the 660/760/860 trenchers, and the larger Construction King backhoes of the same era.

The 480E is not a G207D machine Some published specifications confuse the 480E engine with the 207 cubic-inch G207D used on the late 480D and the 580E. The 480E shipped with the larger 239 ci Cummins 4-390 from the start of production. Order Cummins 4B / 4-390 parts for the 480E — G207D parts are not interchangeable.

Fuel system varied across the production run: early 480Es typically use a Roosa Master / Stanadyne rotary injection pump, while later builds switched to a Lucas / CAV rotary pump. The injector lines differ between the two — verify your IP type before ordering injector lines or pump seal kits.

Two transmission options were offered factory:

  • 4-speed mechanical shuttle — single 11-inch dry clutch, four gears forward and reverse, manual shuttle lever.
  • 4-speed power shuttle — torque-converter coupled, hydraulically actuated forward/reverse clutch pack on a 4-speed gearbox. This is the popular factory configuration and the source of most documented 480E drivetrain failures.

The "8-speed mechanical shuttle" sometimes listed in third-party references belongs to the larger 580E, not the 480E — the 480E was 4-speed only on both shuttle architectures.

4WD front axle and the 480E LL variant

The 480E is the first 480-series machine offered factory with a Carraro 4WD front axle. The 4WD axle uses planetary hub reduction, king pin assemblies on each spindle, and stud-mounted hubs that share parts with the 580E, 580K, 584E, and 586E Case backhoes and forklifts. 2WD remained the base configuration; 4WD was the upgrade. Confirm which axle your 480E has before ordering — the spindles, hubs, king pins, planetary gears, and tie rod ends are all different between the two configurations.

Case 480E LL (Landscape Loader)

Case also offered the 480E LL as a separate factory configuration — a loader-only Landscape Loader without the backhoe attachment, used in landscape, light utility, and skip-loader applications. The 480E LL shares the powertrain (Cummins 4-390 and shuttle drivetrain) with the standard 480E backhoe-loader, but uses a different rear frame, no backhoe swing tower, and a different decal set. The 480E LL has its own dedicated decal set (C480ELL) and filter service kit (CS-480ELL-4390-NT-FK) in our catalog.

Common problems documented by owners

The following failure modes reflect common operator service experience for this model. Diagnose in order before replacing major components.

Power shuttle forward clutch burn-up

The most-reported 480E failure. Symptoms: machine drives in reverse but slips or drops out in forward, with metal and clutch material in the shuttle pan strainer. Root cause is almost always upstream — low Hytran level, the wrong fluid used (engine oil run in the shuttle), or a plugged oil-cooler line starving the shuttle clutches of cooling oil. Inspect the oil cooler line and pan strainer before condemning the clutch pack. Complete power-shuttle rebuild kits and individual friction/steel discs are in stock.

Shuttle charge pump wear

Pressure drops as the oil warms, so the machine creeps forward then dies as engagement pressure falls below the spec minimum. Symptom is intermittent: works cold, fails warm. Replacement charge pump is a straightforward service item.

Cummins 4-390 head gasket weep

The most-reported engine complaint on the 480E. The head gasket commonly weeps between cylinders 3 and 4 at the front of the head — coolant in the oil or external seepage at the deck. Replace with a Cummins 4B head gasket set and re-torque to spec in the correct sequence.

Cummins 4-390 fuel injection pump fade

Hard hot starts, weak power, and stalling under load on high-hour engines trace to the rotary injection pump. Roosa Master / Stanadyne builds and Lucas / CAV builds have different rebuild paths — confirm pump type before ordering parts. Complete rebuilt 4-cylinder Cummins IPs are in stock.

Brake master and slave cylinder failure

The 480E uses hydraulically actuated bonded discs inside drum housings (same architecture as the 480C / 480D — not the multi-plate wet-disc system used on the 580 Super L generation). Common failures include sponge pedal that won't hold (master cylinder weeping), slave cylinder leaks, and brake-side oil migration from worn axle seals. Replacement master cylinders, slave cylinders, and brake discs are stocked.

Steering hand pump and steering cylinder wear

The orbital steering hand pump (orbitrol) and steering cylinder both develop seal weep at high hours. Symptoms: loose play at the wheel, steering drift, fluid weep at the cylinder rod end. Replacement steering motors, complete steering cylinders, and seal kits are all stocked. Note that 4WD machines use a different power-steering cylinder than 2WD machines.

4WD front axle wear

On 4WD-equipped 480Es, the Carraro front axle planetary hubs, king pins, planetary gear pins, and tie rod ends are documented wear items at high hours. Common symptom: clunking from the front end during turns, eventually progressing to leaking grease at the planetary hub. Replacement planetary cover assemblies (new and rebuilt), planetary hub gears, king pins, and 4WD tie rod ends are all in stock.

Pin and bushing wear

Same as the rest of the 480 family — wallowed-out lift cylinder rod-end pins, loader tower pivot pins, backhoe boom-to-dipper pins, bucket-link bushings, and swing tower pins are universal on high-hour 480Es. Hardened replacement pins and bushings, plus full bucket-link assemblies that fit the 480D / 480E / 480F generation, are in stock.

By the 480E, Case had moved off its own engines and onto Cummins. The upside is parts availability — the 4-390 powers half the Case construction lineup of this era, and consumables are everywhere.

Related Case Construction King models

The 480E sits between the 480D predecessor and the 480F successor in the Construction King 480-series lineup. The engine transition to the Cummins 4-390 is the defining change of this era — parts from the earlier G188D / G207D-equipped 480C and 480D do not cross to the 480E engine. Hydraulic cylinder seal kits, bucket links, and several pin and bushing parts continue to cross with the 480D and 480F.

Frequently asked questions

What years was the Case 480E made?

1987 through 1992. The 480F was introduced as the successor starting in 1992.

What engine is in a Case 480E?

The Case 4-390 — Case's catalog name for the Cummins 4B 3.9L four-cylinder naturally aspirated diesel. 239 cubic inches (3.9 L), 69 HP gross at 2,200 rpm. This is the same engine family Case used across the 1150E dozer, 1840 / 1845C skid steers, and the 660-through-860 trenchers from the same era.

Is the 480E engine G207D or 4-390?

4-390. The G207D (Case-built 207 cubic-inch diesel) was used on the 480D and the 580E, but the 480E moved up to the larger Cummins-supplied 4-390 (239 cubic inches). Order Cummins 4B / 4-390 parts for the 480E.

Does the 480E have a power shuttle?

Both shuttle options were offered factory. Synchronized mechanical shuttle (4F/4R with dry clutch) and power shuttle (hydraulic clutch pack with torque converter) were both factory configurations. Power shuttle was the more popular factory choice and is the source of most documented drivetrain failures. Identify which drivetrain your machine has before ordering shuttle parts.

Does the 480E have 4WD?

4WD was offered as a factory option on the 480E backhoe-loader. The 4WD axle is a Carraro planetary front axle. Confirm 2WD vs. 4WD before ordering any front-end parts — spindles, hubs, king pins, planetary gears, and tie rod ends are different between the two configurations.

What is the 480E LL?

The 480E LL is the Landscape Loader variant — a loader-only configuration without the backhoe attachment. Same Cummins 4-390 engine and shuttle drivetrain as the standard 480E, different rear frame, no backhoe swing tower. Used in landscape, light utility, and skip-loader applications. The 480E LL has its own decal set and filter service kit; order off the LL variant if your machine is a loader-only build.

Does the 480E have wet-disc brakes?

No. The 480E uses hydraulically actuated bonded discs inside drum housings — the same fundamental brake architecture as the 480C, 480D, and 480F. True wet-disc multi-plate brakes appeared on the 580K-era Case backhoes but were not used on the 480-series.

How deep does the 480E backhoe dig?

12 feet with the standard backhoe attachment, or 15 feet 1 inch with the Extendahoe.

Where is the serial number on a Case 480E?

Stamped on a data plate riveted to the left side of the tractor frame rail, under the left loader tower near the clutch housing. The engine carries its own Cummins-style serial stamp on the block.

Need parts for your Case 480E?
